You just can't keep a good clown down; not even a closeted male hooker addict & meth-head type of clown. Ted Haggard returns, currently flogging insurance instead of dubious salvation, and preachin' just a bit on the side.

Earlier this month, a guest took the pulpit at Open Bible Fellowship in Morrison, Ill., a 350-member church surrounded by cornfields. The speaker was an insurance salesman from Colorado named Ted Haggard.

The former superstar pastor, disgraced two years ago in a sex-and-drugs scandal, had returned — this time as a Christian businessman preaching a message that was equal parts contrition and defiance. Haggard linked his fall to being molested in second grade and apologized again.

His two sermons were posted, fleetingly, on Haggard's Web site under one word: "Alive!"

While his exact plans remain unclear, Haggard is unmistakably making himself a public figure again, nine months after his former church said he walked away from an oversight process meant to restore him.

The man who confessed to being a "a deceiver and a liar" is asking for another hearing, finding encouragement from a loyal circle of supporters, skepticism from those evangelical leaders who think it's premature and complex emotions at the Colorado Springs church he betrayed.
Perhaps I should be a little more tolerant toward our Teddy. Perhaps he's seen the light and...... Nah. Ain't happening. He's more likely to be trying to get his foot back in the door of the mega-preacher scam, where the bucks are large beyond the dreams of Mammon and behind-the-barn liaisons are easy to pursue.

But we'll see.

Speaking of comebacks, Michelle and I went to see Robert Tilton's Signs & Wonders, Miracles of Faith Crusade yesterday afternoon. Michelle has been a fan of Tilton's (in her own way) for many years and she is on his mailing list which is how we knew about the event. I'm not going to spare you the details of what turned out to be as surreal an afternoon as I have ever spent. But I must sit down and write it out proper, probably as Kil Report.

Stay tuned...

I remember reading Mike Jone's interview on Friendly Atheist, in which Jone predicted that Art Haggard would be back.

Not too difficult a gamble to be sure, but there it is.

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

You do realize that I had seen those video's before seeing Tilton in person. In fact, I was worried about laughing because of them. I managed to put them out of my mind...

Thanks, Kil! That Wiki article was a wonderful read. I did not know any of that about Tilton. What an amazing, and vicious, scammer!

I almost feel bad for pastor Ted. Being so deep in the closet for so long must have been awful. Sure, he had ungodly amounts of cash from his duped followers to buy meth and hookers with, but he had surrounded himself with people trained to hate him. Not exactly an environment for psychological well-being.

And then, when he was outed and got the chance to feel what it was like to be on the receiving end of the "love the sin, hate the sinner" bullshit, he missed his opportunity get the fuck out of his hateful church, settle down with a nice boy, and kick the meth addiction with enough gilt free anal sex as his little heart could desire. Instead he's right back where he was before, no doubt filled with self loathing, because everyone expects him to deny his own biology.
I for one don't envy Haggard one bit. No matter how much money he makes.

Yes, I was certain you did, and can't wait to read your impressions in the Kil Report.

Though not always in front of the TV I'm a night owl and once in a blue moon I've caught a late-night Tilton appearance while channel surfing. I'll never forget the first time I saw those videos on underground VHS tape long before YouTube. Laughed until exhausted. They've influenced my impressions of him ever since.

WeirdCrap has a whole webpage devoted to Robert Tilton with "speaking in tongues" audio links.
