I spoke to some black folks before the National Elections, during the primary season; Many of them were apprehensive about him running for President. Prevalent among the reasons was that they feared for his life and that they thought he, a black man, could not win, so why risk his life. After the elections, the reaction was totally different. Black folks talked about it in terms of “I never thought I would live to see the day a black man would get elected President of the United States-all I could do was just cry.” This was a prevalent theme among many blacks that I spoke to.

Though I'm old, I never saw the first white man elected President, so I cannot but imagine the way black people feel at this time. It looks as though both whites and blacks have gone through some incredible emotional and conceptual changes in the last couple of years, and it's been good for us all.
