My nephew sent me this. Watch this video about the limits of perception. You may be as surprised as I was.

You mean like Michael Shermer drawing our attention to otherwise plausible stuff and then trying to slip Libertarianism in unnoticed, as if it's part of the whole scene, while we are distracted? "Who couldn't notice Libertarianism in an ape suit? C'mon!"

The original research that Shermer is using there is fascinating. If I've got time tomorrow, I'll go find the videos again (there are more) and link to them.

In the meantime, check out this limits-of-perception demo, too.

By the way, I missed seeing the obvious in that video. Also, it's been reported to me, my entire San Diego family missed "it": My brother, my sister, her husband, my father, my mother and her caretaker, and the nephew who sent the vid. Of us all, only my younger nephew saw what the rest did not. The rest of us are trying to forget our failure.

Damn, you imagine there's a career opportunity in this for someone? Like on stage, or in the pulpit?

Tomorrow? Who was I kidding? Sure, it's 2 AM, but that's no excuse to not go look at the Visual Cognition Lab's demo videos. Simons' work is awesome stuff.

Whenever I see this video or especially this version of it, I want to believe that I wouldn't fall for it. But deep down, I bet I'd be one of the many who miss the action.

I didn't miss it. I didn't know what to expect, but with that setup I knew something out of the ordinary was on its way.

On the cards, I saw three of the color changes, and the "extra" in the room for the second half.

But yeah.

Don't sweat it. There are plenty of things in the Lab's videos that I missed.

Although... I did see the thing in the video in the OP.

I saw it! honestly!

However, I did not notice that he stopped a few seconds and beat its chest. I thought I just saw the gorilla just walk through without a pause.

What does it mean if you saw the gorilla but didn't think it was odd?

It swooshed right by me.
I had to go back and double-check the first half of the video to make sure he wasn't pulling my/our legs. I'm still skeptical: the browser must have switched file on me.

You can always try the original video, instead of seeing a video of Shermer's projection of the video.

Wow really? People miss that? Of course this may not be fair since my radar was up do to the nature of this thread but I can't imagine missing those.

Here's another odd one, although I must say I figured it out long before the "reveal." Perhaps with a better FX budget I may have been fooled. Still, even when you know what's wrong, it doesn't look as wrong as it should.
