This striking lady is a Velvet Ant, and don't mess with her!. By far the worst individual wasp stings I've ever received were from Velvet Ants. You note the plural -- sometimes I ain't too smart.
These wasps are quite common world-wide and it is within the realms of speculation that, over a little time, the Hammer Orchid could adapt it's pheromones to another species.
