We're talking about swine flu influenza A(H1N1) over here, but I thought I'd make a new thread here to bring up something I've seen some of floating around-- and it's really quite interesting.

Over on Facebook, an old high school class mate that I've "friended" has this comment:

63,000 people die each year due to regular flu in the United States. Now we have 1 death in the USA from piggie flu, ( and he came from Mexico for treatement BTW,) and the government calls it a pandemic? Tragically, it is WAY to easy to mislead the public. Since then, they ram through a health secretary and an additional billion in spending. Don't waste a good made up crisis Obama.
Get that? According to my old friend here, this influenza A(H1N1) is being hyped by the (US) government as a distraction to push some leftist agenda. Never mind that, by definition, this is a pandemic. And never mind that it's the WHO that's doing all the classifications; Obama has nothing to do with it.

Still, others have liked my old friend's comment and added to it. One guy writes
you hit the nail on the head. It is crazy that the media is creating a panic when many thousands die from the regular flu each year. Get ready because the filibuster is here now and they are about to soon promote socialized medicine and the biggest energy tax hike in U.S. history. Get ready cuz we are close to having a dictatorship and a socialism society- scary.
More conspiracies.

Mooner mentioned other crack ideas out there. Idiot Congresswoman Michele Bachmann even hinted at some evil Democratic scheme.

And I'm sure that this is just the tip of the iceberg. If you hear other loony ideas, post them here. Especially if it's mainstream stuff and not some tinfoil hat guy on his blog (though that's interesting, too). I'm curious about what sort of traction this stuff gets...

I'm looking for the outright frauds with phony nostrums and psychic "cures" to come along. I'm sure the conspiracy crackpots will be the first to buy into them. I understand that they're big on homeopathy.

Michell Bachmann: is anyone taking her seriously any more? Really, she's an embarrassment even to the Republicans.

No need to wait. Horrible Horowitz is already promoting his Oxy-Silver in the same video where he accuses the CDC, a pharmaceutical company, and a scientist, of actually making the virus for genocide, profit, and giggles,

Your friend has the numbers reversed: Every year in the United States, on average: 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu; more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related complications; and about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes.

By the way:
Rep. Michele Bachmann is a typical Republican whose views are central to the morally bankrupt GOP and its leader Rush Limbaugh. Bachmann is quite a fool, as are her colleagues, Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, who yesterday described the Matthew Shepard case as a "hoax", (with Mathew's mom in the audience;) and Far-Rightwing Representative John Boehner, a master of meaningless platitudes. Thanks to the decade-long lock-step legacy of standing together undemocratically, no matter what, a hallmark of the now dwindling Republican party:

If a Democrat says something dumb, people tend to say: "That was a dumb thing that (one) Democrat said" – and it doesn't really affect other Democrats.

But if one Republican says something really dumb, people now say: "That was really stupid what ALL THOSE REPUBLICANS said."

Can homeopathy help in the swine flu epidemic? (Thanks PZ for the link).

Somebody should send this moron a bucket of swine flu and a straw.

Even worse, some people are actually trying to blame God for the pandemic, yet it was Man's original sin which brought disease and sickness into a perfect world. We have no one but ourselves to blame. God offers a cure, but Man refuses it because it does not come on Man's terms....The great hope for this fallen, diseased, weatherworn world, is the return of Christ, who has promised to bring restoration, everlasting health and peace to all people. Unfortunately, for evolutionists, this cannot be a part of their thinking, because it leads them into the first chapters of Genesis. They would rather believe a silly lie than acknowledge Biblical truth.

Got an email from an old highschool buddy tonight, forwarding a newsletter from a Dr. Rowen which said that the government can't help you combat swine flu, but buying reservatrol and Oscillococcinum can.

It's funny how the alt-med crowd is saying "don't follow the advice that costs you nothing but a little more soap and Kleenex, pop a pill instead!" But of course the point isn't to keep people healthy, but is instead to open up their wallets.

It really should be more of a crime than it already is.

As might be expected, the drooling demogogues are all over it. History tells us that this is about par for their imbecilic course:
In the middle of the 14th century, the plague swept across Europe, leaving death and despair in its wake. A terrified and confused population blamed the Jews -- aliens in their midst -- for bringing the "black death" upon them.

Lacking knowledge of viruses or other microscopic organisms, they accused the Jews, a handy target, of poisoning the wells of Christian villages. The charge contributed to a series of pogroms in which thousands were burned alive.

During the more than 600 years since, our understanding of disease transmission has advanced by leaps and bounds, but the same primitive tribalism that inspired the lethal xenophobia that raged across Europe then remains on display today.

With hundreds of cases of swine flu reported in Mexico, and dozens more appearing in the U.S., anti-immigrant hard-liners wasted no time blaming their one-size-fits-all bogeyman for the disease.

They took to the airwaves and scribbled hastily on their blogs about how America's supposed "open-door policy" towards migrants from Mexico was the cause of the outbreak's appearance on this side of the Rio Grande.
I'm also reading that this strain isn't as fierce as it's cracked up to be, but I don't entirely trust my sources. Gonna have to wait & see.

And vice-versa:
Farmers fear pigs may get swine flu from people

By Carey Gillam, Reuters

Humans have it. Pigs don't. At least not yet, and US pork producers are doing everything they can to make sure that the new H1N1 virus, known around the world as the "swine flu," stays out of their herds.
