You'd think this hump would have better and more pressing matters to concern him.
When the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31, 2009, Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) hopes you'll be ringing in “the Year of the Bible.”

It's probably just wishful thinking.

Broun's simple congressional resolution aimed at honoring the Good Book has produced a push-back of biblical proportion in the blogosphere, with critics dismissing it as either unconstitutional or a waste of time. Jews in Congress and atheist activists are dismissing the resolution, while none of the many Democrats in Congress who are Christian have bothered to sign on as co-sponsors.

On the other hand, perhaps we should be generous and consider the source; Broun is all but certifiable and could use a nice rest and a meds review. But, just for the hell of it, let us ask: what difference would it make, beyond the Constitutional issues, of course, if this crap got written into law?

Apart from orgasmic but futile joy in fundie circles, exactly none. Atheists would sneer at it; other religions would spit at it, and the average Christian scuffling down in the street would shrug and continue on with life.

Sometimes I wonder if the people who propose this sort of nonsense have actually read the Bible -- other than those parts that reinforce their fantasies, that is.

Interesting article, filthy. Though it calls this the most blogged-about legislation recently, I hadn't read/heard anything about it. (Head in sand, I guess.)

From the article you linked come these highlights (boldface added):

Barney Frank raises some pointed questions:
"Does that mean 2009 is not the year of the Bible?” mocked Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who is Jewish. “What is 2012 the year of? The Quran?”
Oh, now, that would be nice to see. And 2011 can be the year of "The god delusion".

“This doesn't have anything to do with Christianity,” [Broun] said in an interview with POLITICO. Rather, he says, it seeks to recognize that the Bible played an integral role in the building of the United States, including providing the basis for our freedom of religion that allows Muslims, Hindus and even atheists to vocalize their own beliefs.

<snip>

"...we must also not forget to protect and celebrate our fundamental freedoms that the Bible has influenced,” Broun said.
Bullshit alert! Bullshit alert!

I'll bet good money that he does not believe his own crap about this having nothing to do with christianity. Doesn't that make him a liar, and isn't that something christians would claim is a sin? (Oh, right, I forgot for a moment; lies are apparently OK when the goal is supporting the fable of christianity.)

I challenge Broun or anyone who shares his claim here to show me where in the bible there is anything that reasonably supports these fundamental freedoms:
freedom of religion,
freedom from religion,
freedom of the press,
freedom of speech,
freedom to peaceably assemble,
freedom not to have to house soldiers,
freedom to vote,
freedom to not have any religious tests for holding office,
freedom to marry between 2 consenting adults of any gender or color or religion,
habeus corpus,
prohibition against slavery
...the list goes on.

Broun has gathered 15 co-sponsors, all Republicans, but says he's looking for more and hopes Democrats will sign on, as well.

“This is not a partisan issue,” he said. “I want it to be bipartisan.”

Whether he's successful or not — the same measure didn't go anywhere last year — at least Broun and his fellow supporters can take heart in one fact: They already had a “year of the Bible.”

Ronald Reagan designated 1983 as one, with Congress' blessing
At least this year, Mr. Broun, this is indeed a partisan issue. What is this, yet another useless, impulsive, exclusionary gesture by Republicans to try to bring certain groups back into the fold?

Bullshit alert! Bullshit alert!

It's not bullshit.

But it's massively ironic, because it was the Bible-thumping religio-terror in Britain that caused people to flee to America to found the colony where they could freely practice their faith.
It was oppressive Christianity you have to thank for the freedom; celebrate the NEGATIVE input of the Bible for the freedom.

My bad, in not specifying which line in particular triggered my BS-o-meter: "This doesn't have anything to do with Christianity...”
