Considering the statements and activities of members of the Republican Party herd since the election of the first African-American President, I felt it might be useful to start a thread to collect observations in one place.

I'm talking about racist or other highly bigoted comments from GOP people which might seem more "appropriate" coming from some kind of Fascist party or from the KKK, than from a major US political party.

I'll kick this off with a couple of prominent sightings, probably well known to readers.

The first of my examples is South Carolina GOP activist Rusty DePass, who, in referring to an escaped gorilla at the Columbia, SC zoo, wrote that it was "one of Michelle's ancestors."

The second example comes from the office of Tennessee State Senator Diane Black. It's an email attchment titled, "Historical Keepsake Photo":

Sen. Black's aide, Sherri Goforth (a Tennessee employee), who sent out the above racist image, has been "rebuked" by her boss, but not fired. Goforth "explained" that she had sent the racist email to "the wrong list of people." Apparently, she'd misplaced her KKK and Neo-Nazi mailing lists.

The picture depicting Obama as the two eyeballs peering from blackness is appalling and inexcusable, but the gorilla comment appears to be a statement on evolution and not race.

Busted by South Carolina political blogger Will Folks on his FITNEWS blog, DePass told WIS-TV in Columbia, "I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest."

Then he added, "The comment was hers, not mine," claiming Michelle Obama made a recent remark about humans descending from apes. The Daily News could find no such comment.

So, if true, the statement is appalling for its ignorance, but not for being racist.

If you believe that excuse for even one second (especially in light of the fact that the alleged evolutionary comments by the First Lady are nonexistent), I have bridge I'd like to sell you.

No, just as nearly every African-American is sensitive to the use of ape "jokes," nearly every racist uses them. By inventing an unimplementable excuse, DePass simply confirms his racism by lying to deny it. I'm surprised you'd defend DePass even conditionally, especially considering his far-fetched defensive lie. More than anywhere in the US, Southerners, white and black alike, understand the meaning and intention of such racist comments. DePass knew exactly what he was writing.
