Freakshow highlighted in NY Times
Category: Creationism
Posted on: June 30, 2009 2:19 AM, by PZ Myers

It's getting to be a regular feature—every year, the NY Times must do a story on that bizarre miseducation monument, the Creation "Museum". This time around, the story isn't too awful — it focuses on the recent NAPC meeting, in which several professional paleontologists paid a visit to the creationist carnival to be alternately appalled and amused.

Several people have asked when I'm going to visit Ken Ham's temple. It's been settled! It's all arranged, but no thanks at all to Ham. Here's the deal: I'm going to be speaking at the Secular Student Alliance conference in August, which is being held in Columbus, Ohio…only two hours away from the museum! Sharp-eyed and chronologically aware Phil Ferguson noticed this interesting conjunction, and suggested that I adjust my travel schedule a tiny bit and come down a day early, and we'd take a little side trip. The SSA was amenable and tweaked my flight dates, and it is all happening!

You would find it deeply appreciated by all who see it. All of them!

There's something about "creation science" that I don't understand:
If they start with a conclusion, and then work backwards, gathering evidence and rationale to support it, how is that "science?"

It is not; it is religious apologetics put forth as science by various posers such as Ham, Dembski, Morris, et al. I often browse AiG, ICR and Uncommon Descent, and some others just to see what they might be trying next to get their humbug into the public schools. It's really very interesting, in a queasy sort of way. They preach morality out of one side of their mouths and lie out of the other.

Welcome to SFN, Landrew

You bet-a you Swedish meatball I will!

It's just under 1,200 miles round trip. I figger it'll cost me about $80 for gas, and I'm allowing $200 and maybe a little more for motels & grub & etc. Also $17 (I get a codger discount) for a ticket to get in. If I can leave the "museum" and ride straight home, it'll be a lot less but I don't think I can do that due to my disability. But we shall see....

It would be great to meet a few Skeptic Friends there, as well.

If you do go, Filthy, it'll be too bad that you've already found homes for most of your "hot" herps. It would be so nice to release some of them into the peaceful animatronic scenes of people and dinosaurs living together. A feisty iguana or two could really spice up that pious display. And of course the Eden scene with Adam and Eve could use a more convincingly evil Serpent.

Mix a little cow-blood with water in a water pistol, and spray Adam's legs with it, then let loose the pet komodo...

I'm a little less than three hours from Petersburg. I may have to see if I can get away for a day or two. As with Filthy, money is tight (and my car is junk). I'll start looking at my options.

Beaten to the punch!
Adam and Eve Did What? A Visit to the Creationism Museum Makes Scientists Laugh, Cry

AFP. Posted July 2, 2009.

The museum argues, among other things, that war, famine and natural disasters are to blame on belief in evolution.

For a group of paleontologists, a tour of the Creation Museum seemed like a great tongue-in-cheek way to cap off a serious conference.

But while there were a few laughs and some clowning for the camera, most left more offended than amused by the frightening way in which evolution -- and their life's work -- was attacked.

"It's sort of a monument to scientific illiteracy, isn't it?" said Jerry Lipps, professor of geology, paleontology and evolution at University of California, Berkeley.

"Like Sunday school with statues... this is a special brand of religion here. I don't think even most mainstream Christians would believe in this interpretation of Earth's history."
So, is the museum becoming popular with secular scientists and if so, remembering that these folks will publish, what effect might it have? It'll be interesting to see.

However, they would starve seeing as they won't be able to eat coconuts since Satan removed their coconut cracking teeth after The Fall.

Hah! Big Money's blogged it.
New York Times on Creation Museum Visit by Paleontologists
ShareThisPublished July 1st, 2009 in Press Coverage, Thoughts and Things.
The New York Times published an article on Tuesday about the visit to the Creation Museum by a group of paleontologists recently. It is interesting reading—and, of course, not surprising at all to see the comments made by these evolutionary scientists. I thought I would quote the first paragraph and comment—and then you can read the entire article at the link below.

The first paragraph of the article entitled “Paleontology and Creationism Meet but Don't Mesh” states:

Tamaki Sato was confused by the dinosaur exhibit. The placards described the various dinosaurs as originating from different geological periods—the stegosaurus from the Upper Jurassic, the heterodontosaurus from the Lower Jurassic, the velociraptor from the Upper Cretaceous—yet in each case, the date of demise was the same: around 2348 B.C.

There is no doubt that someone thoroughly indoctrinated in billions of years and evolutionary ideas would react this way. Even most PhD scientists I find don't truly understand the difference between observational (operational) science and historical (origins) science (the word science basically means “knowledge”). They also are not aware of—or don't admit—their starting assumptions (as our Starting Points Room at the museum points out).
He's pretty calm, even cautious, about the whole thing. Well, I never said he was stupid. And he's preaching to the choir, so he doesn't have to wax fulsome.

I am so looking forward to visiting! I wish I already had so's I could start writing about it now.... but I'll leave the fiction to AiG.

I cannot miss this! It is going to be just too choice!
We're in big trouble on our trip to the Creation "Museum", people. We're going on 7 August, and on that very same day, they are planning to present…

THE ULTIMATE PROOF OF CREATION!!!

What is the Ultimate Proof of Creation, you might ask?

There is a defense for creation that is powerful, conclusive, and has no true rebuttal. As such, it is an irrefutable argument--an "ultimate proof" of the Christian worldview. This presentation will equip you to engage an unbeliever, even a staunch atheist, using proven techniques.
This blurt is to be given by our "astronomer" friend, Dr. Jason Lisle, who's apologetics have brought us much hilarity in the past. PZ's reactions should be at the very least interesting.

I may have to take my old pickup instead of the motorcycle, as certain defugalities in my God-designed frame are acting up -- which bodes ill for the pain departement. That'll add on a lot more gas money, but it'll be worth every frackin' cent.
