Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy dead at 77

Too bad he didn't live to see major health care reform that he has been pushing for almost his entire career in the senate. Who knows? Maybe his death will light a fire under some asses in Washington, including Obama's.

As one of the Kennedy bothers, the last of them, and the most powerful liberal in the senate for many years, there will be a lot of news about his life and death in the next several days.

We knew it was coming but I am still very saddened by the news.

Jeez, you're fast! I just heard this a few minutes ago, at the top of the hour news on NPR.

I'd had some hope in the past few days, not knowing how close to the end he was, that he might be able to help make some progress in the healthcare snarl-up by calling a few members of Congress.

Now there's only one Kennedy sibling from that royal family left.

A Great Lion sleeps tonight.

(And the Dems better get their act together and pass health care.)

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

Yes, and the reprecussions are starting, not the least of which is that he can't be succeeded for at least 145 days.
Massachusetts law requires a special election for the seat no sooner than 145 days and no later than 160 days after a vacancy occurs. The law bans an interim appointee.

The law was changed in 2004, when Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., became his party's presidential nominee and Republican Mitt Romney was the state's governor. Before the change, the governor would have appointed a replacement to serve until the next general election.

That would have created the opportunity for Romney to install a fellow Republican in office, a move that Democrats who control the state legislature sought to prevent.

Last week, Kennedy asked Massachusetts lawmakers to change state law to give Massachusetts' current governor, Deval Patrick, a fellow supporter of President Barack Obama, the ability to appoint an interim replacement to Kennedy's seat should Kennedy be unable to continue serving.

I watched FOX this morning and went almost 20 minutes before they mentioned the death...

I am sure they will focus in on how he drove his car drunk into the water with his girlfriend in the passenger seat and then forgot to get her out and then forgot to call the police until the next day. And then walked...

Everyone is aware of Kennedy's failings. That you have reduced an amazingly productive life of public service to that incident, in two posts now, is telling.

I like how he wanted the rule changed to a vote while a pub was in the governors seat and then wanted to go back to this being a governor's decision with a dem in the seat. I'll give him credit for being consistent until the very end. A consistent laughingstock...

Not to mention that he got away with manslaughter at best and murder at worst. What a guy, what a role model...

So should a "productive life of public service" be all that is needed to beat a manslaughter or murder charge for everyone, or just powerful liberal dem senators?

Bill, you can be a real jerk.

The truth hurts, no? But of course when conservative pundits die off you over look all past "failings" (murder/manslaughter) for them too, right?

Yep, everyone is aware of TK's past failings, they just don't care to remember them and they don't like people who have to bring up decades old murder/manslaughter cases against the great lion. He should not be remembered as a killer because of all his great "public service"!?!?!? That trumps murder/manslaughter any day of the week, well, if your a Kennedy it does.

We all know about the case, Bill. Your use of the word "murder" was never in consideration and is only your hyperbolic interpretation of the facts. We can all agree that he did a terrible thing that night. Happy?

Here's what's going to happen now. I must go to work. Dave or someone else will take you on, beat the crap out of you, and you will run, like you always do, because you're a coward and a jerk. And you have never shown those particular attributes more than in this thread, so far.

Only "The Great Lion" himself will ever know if this was murder or manslaughter.

you're a coward and a jerk.

No, a coward and a jerk is someone who leaves his girlfriend to die in a submerged car because he don't want his wife to find out about his cheating and the police to find out about his drinking. So what if the girl dies the powerful senator is looking at a possible scandal here if this goes public.

A coward and a jerk is someone who gets drunk on a phony hunting trip, shoots his friend in the face, then waits some 14 hours, until he's sobered up, to report it.

A coward and a jerk is someone who phonies up terror alerts for political gain.

A coward and a jerk is someone who freezes up, then deserts his post in time of crisis.

A coward and a a jerk is a holder of office that won't allow dissenting views anywhere near him.

A coward and a jerk is someone who invades a sovereign country on false premises.

A coward and a jerk is someone who deserts the military, to be bailed out by his father when he should have stood courts martial.

A coward and a jerk is someone who disrupts town hall meetings and even openly carries firearms to them to intimidate others.

In short, "coward" and "jerk" has become synonymous with "Republican."

Ted Kennedy had his faults and he made his mistakes, Chappaquiddick being a huge one, but he was anything but a coward and a jerk.

Lemme ask you something Bill; while Chappaquiddick was bad shit, everyone agrees, what else do you have on ol' Teddy's fifty years of devoted service to our country? Or are you a one-trick pony on this'n?
