Well, our friend MrMannn has posted about Dawkins and Eugenics.
Naturally, you know my reaction. Not that it'll do any good, being the free speech advocate that he is, I'm not counting on my post ever showing up there.
Still:
Ah yes, to the topic: You may want to read this:
The other thing that's wrong is that all of these attacks are a load of quote-mining from a "letter to the editor" that was no such thing, as even Wesley Smith was forced to admit. Dawkins never said that Hitler's eugenics program "might not be bad," as the LifeSiteNews article misrepresents him. Here's the actual text of a piece represented as a letter to the editor by Dawkins and entitled, Eugenics may not be bad:
Read on for the context. |

"I suppose the honeymoon is over," Emma remarked.
"This is nothing," Kurt waved. "You should have heard her when Wisdom accidentally threw up on her new shoes."
"YOU $#%#^&*&!" Kitty screamed into the phone. "YOU BLEEEEP CAN GO BLEEEP! AND BLEEEEEEEEEEEP!"
"Pretty much like that actually," Kurt winced.

| Cool! Cherry-picking combined with lying.

Well, I've posted over at MrMannn's blog again:
You may want to do some more reading.
Without the headline as a guide, in good conscience I must retract my assertion that Dawkins supports eugenics. I suspect he would, since he apparently does not believe that human life has intrinsic value simply based on being human - the denial of which is also a fundamental premise of eugenics. But I don't know that he would.
Of course, he still has to sling mud...and later on he goes to say
Post Script: Here is a rich irony, considering Dawkins' crusade to destroy religious belief (which is not an issue we discuss here at Secondhand Smoke). The primary supporters of eugenics in the first third to half of the 20th Century were scientists, the self described "free thinkers," political progressives, and religious liberals. The opponents of eugenics were primarily, although certainly not exclusively, overt religionists of a decidedly orthodox persuasion. At least as to the that issue, the religionsts had it right.
Too bad that he left out creationist Dr. Tinkle.
Tinkle opposed evolution and Darwinian theory, but was an enthusiastic proponent of eugenics, and published several articles on the subject. In his 1939 textbook "Fundamentals of Zoology" he devotes a section to "The Need of Human Betterment", where he laments the existence of "defective families" who "give birth to offspring like themselves" , producing "persons of low mentality, paupers and criminals in much greater ratio than the general population" [8, p. 130]. Negative eugenics via institutionalization seems to have been his preferred eugenic solution:
It is an excellent plan to keep defective people in institutions for here they are not permitted to marry and bear children.[8, p. 131]
and
[Scientists who are working at the task of improving the human race] would like to increase the birth rate of families having good heredity, while those people having poor heredity should not marry at all.[8, p. 131]
I know you won't publish this, so I'll just post it at my "liberal" forum. If you ever feel like coming over and having a real debate, being the free-speech and anti-censorship advocate that you are, come right over.

What a f***ng looser!

| "MrMannn" is a cheap liar and a craven coward. He's afraid to duke it out with ideas and evidence in a forum like this, where rebuttals are not "deleted by the author."
