What on Earth? # 79: Desolate Island

This is the main island in an extremely remote island group.

For one point per question:

1. What's the name of this island?

2. In what country owns it?

3. What's its namesake cabbage good for?

I'll let someone else try before I answer. After I've had my sea bass fried rice and chinese broccoli I'll chime in if no one has.

1) La Grande Terre, of the the Kerguelen Island chain
2) France
3) Kerguelen cabbage is also known as horseradish, which I have a fondness for.

Correct, correct, and, yes, it is known as horseradish. But Kerguelen cabbage (Pringlea antiscorbutica) is a distant relative to the plant (Armoracia rusticana) which supplies your horseradish.

Yet I will accept your answer. The answer I'd hoped for is spelled out in Kerguelen cabbage's scientific name: Its anti-scurvy properties ("antiscorbutica"), which were a life saver to sailors in the old days. It's loaded with Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid.

Three more points.

Wiki on the Kerguelen Islands. And on Kerguelen cabbage.
