The Bad Astronomer thinks it was a rocket, and has a video of a simulation of such a rocket failure which looks remarkably close to the real thing.

Oh yeah, article from a UFN source (Unidentified Flying News)...The Sun. ;)

Most likely it's this, from Wiki, which, if it's the case would make the UFO 'identified'...

"2009
According to unconfirmed Russian Military sources, December 9th 2009 a Bulova test failed leaving a strange spiral pattern in the skies over Norway. This missile was launched from the typhoon class submarine "Dmitri Donskoy" in the White Sea area."

Should add....that would be pretty cool/bit freaky to see in person. But as we all know, most all these UFO things can be explained in earthly terms.

Wow though. As UFO's go, this one is pretty cool.

Yeah, for a second I thought it could be more of the dreaded Illegal Aliens from Outer Space!

Sounds like this Russian Concussion's evasive technique is to run away from itself. Unlike the Timex, the Bulava takes a lickin' and starts a'stickin'!

Mystery solved! We've been invaded by aliens from the planet Pulchritude! Run to the nearest florist, and make dinner reservations as fast as you can!

Ah, would that it could be.... I think that the malfunctioning rocket is the best explanation thus far and is most likely correct. It certainly is a remarkable effect and I wish I could have seen it.

Odd, we haven't heard anything from UFO conspiracy dingbats, or at least I've not come across anything.

Doesn't that make it an IFO now?

An embarrassing test failure, but identified nonetheless.

For some though, way out in the woo-woo factor, it still is a UFO with cover up conspiracy brewing at all angles.

That Norwegian sky event was one of the most awesome, spectacular and just hair-raisingly creepy things I've ever witnessed, even at second hand.

When I first saw the photos and videos, my thoughts merely began with, "Now there's something you don't see every day." And I got that skin-crawling feeling of seeing something massive in scope that seemed unexplainable. The utter perfection of the moving spiral itself seemed utterly unearthly. I didn't know what this thing was, but I felt that if there were anything really spooky that might turn out to be real, this must be it.

So I kept Googling until I found out about the Russian missile test gone awry. Suddenly, it all made a more prosaic, but no less spectacular sense: A rocket had gone into a runaway powered spiral in the vacuum of space. I'm now just a little bit sympathetic to all those who leapt that mental gap between the unexplained and the wrongly explained.

I just hope that some of those that made that leap from UFO to alien spacecraft will in the future think to accept that many things are simply unexplainable, unless and until a real explanation is found.

Mooner.....

I agree. Several of the photos and videos are actually awesome (a word that I don't use much because of it's abduction by teenagers)

I downloaded one of the better images for inclusion in a book on which I'm currently working (pending settling copyright issues). It is so spectacular, I am enlarging it to a framed copy and titling it "IFO" for wall display.

This whole event is a perfect example of apparently impossibly weird aerial phenomena having a relatively prosaic explanation!
