Is Keith Olberman overreacting here?

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Of course, but I think that a good deal of this kind of hyperbole may be a good thing to counteract the avalanche of lies coming from the rabid Fox black hole, Limbaugh, and the whole damn Republican establishment!

How many giant corporations are going to buy Democratic congressmen and senators this fall? They will bribe the Republican candidate in every race in the country and likely take control of Congress. Democrats can't possibly raise a fraction of the money the big boys will toss around! Bye, bye democracy!

Yeah, they just didn't belong in this thread.

Appropriate to this thread would be Ed Brayton's post about why the SCOTUS ruling is almost inconsequential, and his post today referencing Glenn Greenwald. According to these guys, almost any negative reaction to the SCOTUS ruling would be an overreaction.

Okee-dokee, lemmee over-react just a little -- that decision sucked teabags!

If I have it straight, and I'm pretty sure that I do, there in nothing in the decision that would keep foreign corporations with even tenuous American ties from pouring money into our elections. This includes the barbarians of Saudi Arabia as well as the Chinese.

Nice, huh?

Yeah, what would happen if foreigner Rupert Murdoch's corporations could have any say in U.S. politics?

I don't think that is the question. I think what we are bitching about here is that the cost just went up.

Gorgo.....

Democrats can't be bought? You think they're working for you now?
Of course they can, but once the most venal of them (can you say "Blue Dog"?) firmly decide that it's all about nothing but the money and re-election, and the GOP is looking like a midterm winner, they'll just stop fucking around and change parties.

Because unions and grass roots liberals can't begin to match the money that investment banks, munitions makers and oil companies can provide to bribe politicians; the big, big money will go largely to Republican candidates! It's no accident that the SCOTUS decision was 5-4 along strictly party lines!

Brayton says:
The corporate world faced a minor inconvenience at the most. They continued to spend money by the dumptruck-full, they just did it indirectly so that you had to do a ton of research to know who was really endorsing which candidate.
Yeah, and the big boys had to be pretty careful to hide their tracks in order not to be caught by campaign finance regulations. Now the floodgates are open and they can (and will) literally spend billions to buy the candidates of their choice - Dancer is dead on - the price will go way beyond what the disorganized Democrats can raise.

The point that Brayton misses is that Corporate America can fork up vastly more than Internet and community organizing can. Corporate America is not going to finance many Democrats. That money will largely go to the GOP candidates and the big companies will have a powerful voice in both selecting and electing them.

I would freely predict that the Republican kitty will be two to three times what the Dem's can raise this fall. And mucho TV, print, and Internet propaganda does count in courting our ignorant electorate.

If pollyanna Grayton was right, the intelligent and honest Democrats that we currently have in Congress right now (certainly not all of them) would not be working feverishly to draft legislation that proscribes the details of Corporate political spending.

Whether Pelosi and Reid can get it through before fall looks pretty dicey, tho'!

I'm not sure what you mean by the cost going up. The wealthy own the media, the lobbyists, the think tanks, the schools, and they find ways around laws to donate to the candidates. Obama's rise came from Wall Street money. They give equally to Democrat and Republican, so I'm not sure of Bngbuck's point either.

Free speech is free speech. Unions can now give in ways they couldn't before.

As long as it's a contest of one dollar one vote then money will buy elections. Unless we end capitalism we will have one dollar one vote. Real campaign finance reform might reduce some of the effects of that.
