If I have learned one thing in my experience with handling various reptiles it's that when you pick one up, you'd be wise to have a safe method of putting it back down figured out. Otherwise you might suffer a great deal of pain or worse. This, I suspect, is the position the Republicans now find themselves in re: the venomous teabaggers.
It turns out that even teabaggers are starting to realize their movement is essentially an appendage of the Republican Party. TPM’s Zachary Roth reports:

A prominent Tea Party leader from Texas is warning that the movement “is becoming nothing more than a wholly owned subsidiary of the Republican Party,” and slamming Sarah Palin as representing “a growing insider’s attack to the heart of the Tea Party.”

Dale Robertson, the founder of TeaParty.org, is just the latest Tea Partier to express concern that the movement is being hijacked by the GOP.

The fact is the tea party never had any credibility as an independent movement, but it’s nice to know its members are noticing now.

OK, let’s see. The movement only became serious in 2009, a few months after they realized Obama was a socialist who wanted to take their money, guns and bibles. (He actually gave most of them a tax cut and expanded gun rights and talks about God all the time, but alright, those are just facts.)

What you teabaggers claim to want (correct me if I’m wrong) is limited government, low taxes, low spending, civil rights — textbook libertarian issues. That’s fine. So then where were you folks when Bush was running up a record $1.3 trillion deficit? Why weren’t you all teabagging him and the Republican Congress for blowing a huge budget surplus on corporate giveaways, prescription drug entitlements and unnecessary wars, all of which were unpaid for? Where were you during Bush’s first round of bank bailouts?

'K Republican idiots, you embraced that snake and you are stuck with it until you can toss it without getting whacked. I don't think you can do it and I look forward with amused anticipation to watching you try.

Obama's 2008 ass-kicking of John McCain finqally has gotten through to the GOP, and they see a need for change. The American people decided the previous eight Bush years had taken the nation into war, economic disaster, and too far to the right.

Now the Republicans are correcting their mistakes, by moving their Party to the far, far right.

Like illiterate country preachers, both the Teabaggers and the GOP are doing some dangerous snake-handling.

Just as the GOP has hugged an incoherent but fascist-tinged Know-Nothing populist movement to its breast, so have the Teabaggers embraced a corrupt pack of corporate-backed stooges who have keen eyes for personal profiteering from lobbyists and the public tax rolls.

The GOP has for years been dominated by sly, get-rich-quick used car salesmen who care nothing for America's future. It's no wonder thet, after nearly destroying America, they are just as willing (and even more capable) of destroying their Grand Old Party.

It's a match made in Hell. The Teabaggers and the GOP deserve one another.

That's a juvenile Florida cotton, A. p. conanti. She's probably something like 2 years old, and in high dudgeon at the photographer. Pretty li'l gal when she's angry, isn't she?

Has that cottonmouth inflated herself to look bigger, or are they normally so fat?

They tend to be a little porky anyway, but she is trying to make herself appear a little larger. It's a very common action with many species, as the Republicans Party is in the process of finding out.

It's one of the problems of keeping bulky snakes like cottons and the big African adders, et al.; you've got to balance their nutrition against their weight. If you don't, you will wind up with a scaly, dangerous log. As the Republican Party may soon find out.

There's a reptile collection not far from here that has a massively fat cottonmouth, looks like a beaver tail with fangs.

I still chuckle at the irony of the Tea Party movement that the original tea party was a protest of tax cuts for the East India Company.
