Article excerpt: Video gamers and warfighters alike will appreciate this stunning first-person-shooter view of a Dutch marine boarding team taking back a German merchant ship from Somali pirates.

As a Liveaboard Sailor I read with interest pirate activity world wide. Let's face it help can be hours if not a day or more away. Providing your own protection or going without (which some do) are your only two options. Real time help is not an option. In cruising circles, attacks on smaller cruising boats do occure without cable news coverage. They are infrequent, that is more due the fact that such news travels fast among cruisers thus the potential victims avoid unsafe areas by choice. Which can have a financial impact affecting the local economy. This fact keeps small vessels safe in all but select impoverished remote areas. Staying in more traveled regions is a safer bet.
Who hasn't heard of the more brazen activities of the Somali pirates of late? Here is an article of and a headcam video of the liberation of a commercial transport captured by pirates April 5 2010. SS

That was interesting. A raid very professionally pulled off by the Dutch marines.

Lately some of the Somali pirates have been operating far out into the Indian Ocean, even closer to India than to Somalia. Their area of operation is so vast that it's impossible for all the navies in the world to provide protection for passing ships.

IMO, pirates are among the lowest scum on earth. Until it becomes far too dangerous for them to attack ships, Somalia piracy will continue to grow. I believe that eventually the pirate bases will be shut down, since that's the only thing that will work.
