You'd better hope that this (fourth paragraph down) is somehow a really good Poe...

Hat tip to PZ.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

I've long known that Joe Lieberman is a political opportunist, a poltroon and a scumbag. It grieves me to include Johnny McCain in that description, but you earn the name you get. If there were a god of any sort, I would thank it that neither ever got anywhere near the presidency, and pray that neither ever does.

I'm reading the SPQR series, a wonderful set of detective novels by John Maddox Roberts, set in the final years of the Roman Republic.

Rome's Republic, with its many institutional balances of power, corruption and integrated class warfare, was hardly an ideal of democracy that one would wish to see emulated, but it was certainly better than the infamously autocratic Empire that replaced it.

Ultimately, the legislative bodies of the Republic democratically ceded their powers to autocrats. At the time, they cited good reasons of national security for doing so, but afterward, there was no way to reconstitute the Republic.

Bills like McCain's and Lieberman's force me to wonder whether our present republican representative democracy is being eroded and may someday be replaced by an outright American Empire.

Corporate funded empire, because without the corporations there will be no economy to speak of.

To be fair, everyone needs corporate sponsorship these days.
