Not just crazy, but stark, raving mad; these Jesus freaks on the TX Board of Education.

No, I take that back; they are attempting to craft the nation into images of their cretinous selves rather than being merely mentally ill (although I consider that in itself a serious, intellectual aberration). They've got no patriotism; no loyalty to other than themselves and no smarts.

The Terrible Texas Textbook Showdown

By karoli Tuesday May 18, 2010 7:00pm

On May 19th, the Texas Board of Education will meet to approve the final Social Studies curriculum and textbook changes that caused such a stir back in March.

Since that meeting, even more changes have been proposed which, if adopted, promise to rewrite history for Texas schoolchildren to the conservative narrative. Uber-winger Don McLeroy's proposals:

•Undermine the doctrine of separation of church and state. McLeroy wants to substitute an unintelligible standard asking students to "contrast the Founders' intent relative to the wording of the First Amendment's Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause, with the popular term 'Separation of church and state.'"

•Attacking social programs. McLeroy proposes children "discuss alternatives to long-term entitlements such as Social Security and Medicare" as a solution to the current ratio of workers to retirees. This is a particularly odious theme, given that the ratio will be entirely different by the time these children are at the peak of their careers.

•Skew focus toward conservatives. McLeroy's logic:

"This is relevant to assessing the policies of the various ideologies that have shaped where we are as Americans," said McLeroy, who has joined with other members of his board bloc to put a more conservative slant on the social studies standards.

For example, high school students will have to learn specifically about leading conservative groups from the 1980s and 1990s in U.S. history, but not about identified liberal or minority rights groups.

•Removal of all references to the terms "justice" and "equality".
Robert C. Koons, Dominionist author of the pamphlet "Introduction to Conservatism" has thrown his two cents in:

This artificially inflated controversy points to a larger issue: The people must not develop the habit of blind deference to academic experts. Just as war is too important to be left entirely to the generals, so history education is too important to be left to the historians. It is through our conception of our history that we define ourselves as a country. The fundamental question is this: Shall we continue to have a government ruled by the people, or shall we instead yield to a self-perpetuating caste of "experts"?

So, let amateurs and the ignorant teach the children rather than someone who actually knows about the topic, eh? That statement clearly shows what happens when such a situation evolves. McLeroy is not only a scumbag, but an idiot in the bargain.

I don't think it's gonna fly. I think TX will ultimately lose this one just like they lost the Battle of the Alamo. Other states are reviewing their text books and only a few will go along with Lone Star bullshit. I foresee a renaissance for smaller textbook publishers.

They've already decided that science is too important to leave to the scientists, so it's just consistent for the TSBE to make certain history is rewritten by non-historians.

Why stop there?

Why not also assure that mathematics is retooled by preschoolers who can't even count, since that subject also is too important to leave to the elitist "experts"? Likewise, athletics should be retaught by little old blue-haired ladies who are experts at BINGO. English should be taught by Mongolian herders who know not a word of the language.

Ah, Texas, you gotta love it! No, on second thought, you don't.

Under that philosophy, McLeroy, a dentist by trade and training, should be driving a big truck, and oil field roughnecks drilling teeth.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Hi sonia1234, and welcome to SFN!

I think your post might be more comfortable as an OP in this forum, as it is way off topic here, even though the TX Board of Education might also be discussed there.

Again, welcome!
