Well. Here's an idea...

Lawmaker tells BP chief to 'commit hara-kiri'

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A hearing to discuss the future of national energy policy in the wake of the Gulf oil disaster got pretty ugly Tuesday.

Lawmakers slammed executives from five of the world's largest oil companies. At one point Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., called on Lamar McKay, chairman and president of BP America, to quit his job. Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao, R-Louisiana went so far as to suggest McKay try a type of ritual suicide.

"Mr. Stearns asked you to resign. In the Asian culture we do things differently. During the Samurai days we just give you a knife and ask you to commit hara-kiri," said Cao, who is of Vietnamese descent.

McKay did not respond to these comments. However, he did say that a relief well will allow his company to get the leak under control "by mid-August."

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

There needs to be a FBI investigation into this, a criminal investigation of BP and the MMS and the people who wrote all these things that say there is no chance of this happening. The MMS probably needs to be eliminated and replaced too. Nothing but a rubber stamp for oil companies anyway.

It's about acting honorably coming from a representative from Louisiana, easily the hardest hit state. I would have ignored the line too, but I would have understood its meaning. Yeah, it's a shitty thing to say, but those guys need to have shitty things said to them as long as they keep on lying.

Maybe I have a sick sense of humor, but I'm fine with it...

My only issue is that the Senators never get the same public "We'd be better off if you killed yourself" treatment. Perhaps he should have said,"So you would have prefered if the Japanese won the war Senator?"

They're just using their position to grandstand and maybe make some headlines by being an ass to an unpopular person (who cannot respond for political reasons). I've never seen a high profile congressional hearing that was anything other than this shit, these guys aren't trying to fix anything. Watch a congressional hearing that isn't making headlines and you'll see the difference (in the number of congresspersons attending and the tone).

So, Dr Mabuse any comments on the performance of your former boss yesterday?

Other than being glad of being rid of him?

Lifting big salaries seems to be what they do better than anything else.
Learning from previous mistakes doesn't seem to be one of them.
At least he got lectured by the Principal.

I am late coming into this thread, and I confess I've not read the whole thing. But this seems a bit much:

Rep, Joe Barton (R-TX, where else?) has apologized to BP for them having to put up a sum toward the cleanup. In short, corporations, especally the larger ones, should be able to shirk their responsibilities with impunity.
We're sorry that the government wants to penalize you for creating the worst environmental disaster in the history of the United States, one Republican congressman has suggested to BP.

During a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday, Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) called the $20 billion escrow fund that BP has promised to establish a "shakedown" and apologized to BP Tony Hayward.

"I'm speaking totally for myself and I'm not speaking for the Republican Party and I'm not speaking for anybody in the House of Representatives but myself, but I'm ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday," Barton began.

"I think it's a tragedy of the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what I would characterize as a shakedown," he continued, "in this case, a $20 billion shakedown with the Attorney General of the United States -- who is legitimately conducting a criminal investigation and has every right to do so to protect the interests of the American people -- participating in what amounts to a $20 billion slush fund that's unprecedented in our nation's history, that's got no legal standing, and that I think sets a terrible precedent for the future."

"I'm only speaking for myself," Barton repeated. "I'm not speaking for anybody else, but I apologize. I do not want to live in a country where any time a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong and is subject to some sort of political pressure that is, again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown. So I apologize."

Story continues below...

The plot is a little thicker than that, though. It seems that Barton has benefited to the tune on 1.5 mil from the oil industry, so it is probably an attempt to ensure a lobbyist gig for when he leaves Congress.

Thoughts of the Rude Pundit:
6/17/2010
Now That You've Asked, Why the Hell Doesn't God Do Anything About the Oil Spill?:

Really, one of the only questions left regarding the BP oil spill has to be "Why the fuck doesn't God get off his lazy ass and do something about it?" God's just sittin' around, eatin' Cheetos, trippin' balls, gettin' handjobbed by Marilyn Monroe while watchin' the World Cup, wonderin' what side he should take each game, and, hey, babe, could you use your other hand to pass that beer? Apparently, that holy sack of shit can't even take a second to pinch the oil well and seal it off.
Why indeed? Of course, MM would be something of a distraction....

I actually agreed with much of what she had to say except for the end about the new energy policy and the dictatorship she apparantly wants from the Obama Administration. Also, does she really think we can just say we will stop using oil and it will happen?

I missed the part about the dictatorship. What was it?
Also, does she really think we can just say we will stop using oil and it will happen?
With a concerted, nation-wide effort we could be powering just about everything in this country via renewables by 2030.

Unfortunately, too many people will whine about their taxes going up and instead choose the status quo in which their fuel bills will keep going up.
