Since I'm moving there on Sunday (I will try to post some impressions of this move Real Soon Now), I keep at least one eye on news from the Philippines. The following story comes from Baguio City, the town I'm making my home.

You think the USA is a religion-plagued nation? We're pikers compared to the Philippines, where the Catholic Church arrogantly (and hypocritically, considering that many if not most prominent Filipino families are descended from "chaste" priests) ruled in all spheres of life for centuries, and hasn't gotten out of the (ahem) habit yet.

Here's a taste of Old Time Religion Sampaguitaland style:
BISHOP FEARS SEX EDUCATION WILL BE USED TO ADVANCE RH BILL

Friday, 18 June 2010 13:07

BAGUIO CITY - A church leader here is apprehensive of the objectives of the inclusion of sex education in the school curriculum.

Bishop Carlito Cenzon of the Vicariate of Baguio-Benguet is worried about the inclusion of sex education in the normal subjects of the pupils and students in the elementary and high school level.

Cenzon said that he is very much concerned of what the teachers would be teaching the students on the sex education subject.

"I have only questions, what are they going to teach? How are they going to teach this?" Cenzon said.

The Bishop is also concerned of the contents of textbooks. It may contain materials on contraception and abortion and this is very much against the Roman Catholic Church, he said.

The methodology also should be considered since it is a very sensitive matter, he added.

The church leader has apprehension that the sex education might be used to advance the controversial Reproductive Health Bill in Congress.

Department of Education Regional Director Josefina Tamondong said that the church and other sectors should not worry with the inclusion of sex education in the curriculum since it has been integrated in some subjects like science such as biology and anatomy for high school.

In pre-school, sex education is knowing one’s gender and young children discover being a boy or a girl. In high school and elementary, the study of the reproductive system and the human body is really not new to the students.

Tamondong clarified that sex education is not teaching sex perse inside the classrooms and this should be understood by those who oppose to it. ** Redjie Cawis PIA

You poor sod...why are you going there?

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

I bet it's because of the hot little Filipino chicks!

Haole with heart, thats all I'll ever be. I'm not a part of the North Shore society. Stuck on the shoulder, that's where you'll find me. Digging for scraps with the kooks in line. -Offspring

That, and the fact that I will now be able to afford to eat everyday. After the recession hit, I had to scale back my withdrawals from my IRA, eventually to nothing. Living on Social Security alone here in the USA is killing me. In the Philippines, I can live well, even on that.

Gotta go now. I'm getting started on the way to the airport in an hour, me and my little dog, too.
