Hat tip to Ed Brayton for this.

Gallups is not alone with the sentiment America could be under a curse from God.

"I believe this is evidence that when you turn your back on Israel, especially when you've been a supporter, you're gonna see judgments come from God," said Hal Lindsey, author of "The Late Great Planet Earth."

"It's finally reaching the point where God is removing His protection from us," he said. "I believe we back away from being a friend to Israel at our peril. We need to come back to be a supporter of one who is so important in God's plan."

Regarding the oil spill specifically, Lindsey said, "I think that this disaster is just one of many disasters. Our country is falling apart economically. The current government is overturning our constitutional republic, turning it into a socialist country. That's about as big a curse as you can get. We just have one catastrophe after another and then we have this big wake-up call in the Gulf."

So, who's one of the "experts" who came up with that shit? Hal Lindsey.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

I think I'll go and quietly puke now.

Go onto any odd story about a natural occurrence. (One that strikes me in particular is the 5 point quake near Ottawa, Canada) On Yahoo, they have turned on comments. Invariably, some Bible thumping twit makes some long ass post about the rapture and end times.

God, please save me from your ardent followers.

How Hal Lindsey continues to make money is beyond me. I used to listen to his radio show-- "Week in Review"-- all the time. The thrust of it used to be that a) Hal knows more than a little bit about Biblical prophecy, and b) you'd better book one of his super expensive tours to the Holy Land now because pretty soon, the Anti-Christ is going to be here.

Oh. I guess that's how he makes money.

But still. His book, The Late Great Planet Earth, has sold in the tens of millions. If I recall correctly, in it he argued that Bible prophecies called for some sort of massive land war involving the USSR and maybe China over the state of Israel all to take place in the late 80's. It's way past then. The war hasn't happened. There's no USSR. Why do prophecy-lovers take this guy seriously?

Well, I guess you know that Gov. Jindal's getting into the act.

Now, with coastal wildlife trapped and dying in sludge, with the human beings of the Gulf Coast facing the loss of culture, livelihoods, and our beautiful wetlands — courtesy of BP — Gov. Jindal felt called to set aside June 27 as an official day of prayer for divine assistance in “persevering” through this mess — and to post the call to prayer on his official state website. In 2008, his constituents couldn’t even get him to acknowledge the letters he got from scientists and citizens who asked him to veto the LSEA. But now, with the Gulf of Mexico hemorrhaging oil, he was only too happy to sign an official proclamation declaring a “Statewide Day of Prayer for Perseverance Through Oil Spill Crisis” [pdf]. The irony of this is as thick as the oil in the Gulf.

Guess who likes that?

So...
If you have always hated Israel, you're OK with God in the respect that you were never a supporter who could be punished for changing position in the first place?

OK, I think I've seen the funniest retort from someone while responding to a end-times thumper.

Thumper: Follow Jesus.

Comic: I tried following Jesus once. I got arrested for stalking.

That there is funny.

A kook in the local paper says that god did it because of abortion. I, of course, disagreed.

When these religious people talk about a reason for a disaster is because of some sin, it is never a sin they themselves think they struggle with. Didn't Pat Robertson claim Katrina happened because of sexual sin in New Orleans? Why wouldn't God destroy New Orleans because of lies or not honoring your parents? Those are sins as well. But these sins they won't admit are as bad because they struggle with them. Ultimately no religious person knows if there is a purpose for a particular disaster other than natural or man made causes.

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. - George Washington
