Yep, that jackass again. Well, this time ranting against "science fetishists"

Well, I couldn't let that get by

7/18/10 9:36 AM

Well, since Vox Day doesn't seem to have such a high regard for science, may I ask just why in hell he's using a product of science to bitch about science with?

If he wants to talk about the comparative track record of science and religion, then I'll just point out that it's science that has cured diseases, not religion. It's science that has shown us how the world works, not religion. It's science that has improved farming techniques, not religion.

By the way, is that an economist's prediction he's using?

Anyway, as for the "accuracy" of religious predictions, I seem to remember Jesus saying something about "some of those standing here will not taste of death" until he returns in his kingdom.

Whoops. I love the apologetic rationalizations, though!

Now, for a creationist prediction failure:

You all do realize that economists are closer to psychological sciences than the actual physical sciences, right? In other words, economists deal with human attitudes and way of thinking as opposed to how things work in nature.

I severely doubt that any real physical scientist, or even many economists would agree that poverty will be wiped out soon, if at all.

Nice of Vox to take one sodding guy and with that sample size of ONE, go running around gloating that religion has the better track record.

I'll say one thing: He's got the most agressive posters there. Already a reply:

You're not serious, are you? Calling the Internet a "product of science" is like calling microwave popcorn a product of science. Technology != science.

Oh, and don't end a sentence with a preposition. It's unscientific.

Science vs religion: a bet
PTQ claimed that science has a vast track record of correct predictions while religion has none. "Science has produced zillions of correct predictions. Religion has produced none. A bigger winner-loser gulf does not exist." Very well, then let's place a bet on the matter:

Religion: The poor will be with you always.
Science: Global poverty will be ended by 2025.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not!), but I seem to recall that "The poor will be with you always" was not a prediction; rather it was something Jesus said to one of his hangers-on when discussing cash donations to the poor or to himself.

John 12:8: For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

Pox Vox is scarcely worthy of comment.

But it's still no-bet because the rapidly expanding world oligarchy will never allow the poor to have much of anything.

A poster somewhere else really got a good point in, one which I basically copied and posted over at Vox's.

For those who still care (which I admit, is starting to exclude myself):

The second of two replies to some guy who's an "old earth creationist" who chides me for being "ignorant" for looking at the YECs view in showing how genesis is messed up compared to science (he thinks the Old earth view reconciles the two):

Two things I forgot:

1) About the geneologies given in the bible, your guy says:

The point here is that even those who hold most rigidly to the traditional interpretation of the Biblical text do not regard Ussher's type of computing to be a reliable method of interpreting the Bible. Because there are well-founded historic dates which force human history back farther than these calculations allow, and because of the known existence of some gaps in the genealogies, it might be more reasonable (within some sort of limits) to assume that the historic and archaeological dates are approximately correct.

"Approximately"? When the fossil record details anatomically modern humans being around for several tens of thousands of years?

Just how many and how BIG are those "gaps" in those geneologies? Why couldn't your "infallible" god prevent those from happening so that this "confusion" over the dates of the first humans could have been avoided?

This is amusing:
Other dating techniques are more suspect, but we should not just assume they are wrong if we have learned anything at all from this book. It is quite likely that the error lies in our traditional understanding of scripture

Wonder what it would take for this Stoner guy and people like him to say: "Ok, the bible was wrong"?

2) Death. The bible says that death did not enter the world until after the so-called "first man" sinned. The problem is that the evidence of the fossils shows that plants and animals have been living and dying long before that "first man" arrived about 40,000 years ago!

Whoops. Can it refer to just "spiritual death"? I doubt it, because in genesis it pretty much talks about death entering nature itself.

So, the bible says that death came after man arrived, real-life says different.

As I said: The order of things in genesis is buggered up.

As for the ostrich, the female only treats the "surplus" eggs badly, not "her own" as the bible implies. It's just a mistake on the part of the people who saw that; no big deal unless you pretend that the bible has scientific foreknowledge given by "god".

Now to end with some more stupidity by Stoner:
Much of the teaching of evolution is founded upon "religious" atheism instead of scientific evidence. This is why evolutionists have religious faith in the "facts of evolution" where scientific caution would be more befitting a scientist. It would be nice if we creationists were in a position to point this out to them; but we are not likely to be heard.

Bullshit on two counts:
Count one: the supposed "lack of scientific evidence":

http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/
http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/jury-rigged.html
http://www.talkorigins.org/origins/outline.html#fossils

Count two:
Waaaa! No one listens to us! ("we are not likely to be heard"):
http://www.talkorigins.org/indexcc/

You've been heard, and rebutted many, many times. What you people want is not to get a fair hearing, but to be uncritically accepted. If anyone dares question you: Just do what Stoner did and blame "atheism", the stupid prat.

Nope. Just point him to this post. Even if we concede that the "days" in Genesis could be longer time periods, the order of events is completely off. There is no way to reconcile Genesis with our modern scientific understanding of things.

Won't work.

Vox and his sycophants hate PZ Myers a lot so any mention of him will just get handwaved away and ridiculed. Any valid points will be ignored.

Remember, VD misquoted some guy while placing the actual passage in context in his blog, thus shooting himself down. I pointed it out, (see Vox's site, my 7/24/10 10:16 AM comment and so far, no one cared.

Secondly, the guy I'm talking to referred me to this site which promotes that nonesense. So, I constructed my reply with that particular site in mind.

That's why I talked about the order of man's appearing and Death in my latest post there.

You can see how effective I am over there by looking at Tool boy's last comment to me. He still ignores the fact that VD was taking some guy out of context as the basis for the original fucking post.

Yep. I figured it wouldn't work:

And P.Z. Meyers our erstwhile Marine Biologist, is an authority on this? Not. His "analysis" is superficial and involves at least as much eisegisis (reading in) of his personal views as do YECs. He essentially provides nothing more than an "argument from personal incredulity". He's wrong on some of the basic astrophysics/geology and moreover he's relying on reading in his own incredulity regarding the non-24 hour and non-fixed length of the time periods along with his preferences over the focus of the narrative. He interprets it to fit his a priori conclusion, but that doesn't obviate the conclusion that it can be interpreted in accordance with modern scientific evidence. Funny how he hasn't been willing to debate this with an astrophysics guy like Hugh Ross.

I did use that info in my next reply though. This is my reply to the quoted part above:

Let's look, shall we?

"And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." The "face of the waters"? That rules out even water vapour because a cloud or, as Stoner put it: "a shapeless nebula" wouldn't have a "face" in the first place. That could only occur with liquid or solid water, but liquid water came billions of years later, after the earth actually formed.

Then there's the order in which the plants and animals appeared. Whether you're YEC or OEC, the bible has the order botched up. It has plants, flowers, fruits, etc. appearing 2 "days" before the fish do! Myers points out, and you brainlessly ignored the fact that: Grasses and angiosperms (flowering plants) arose in the Cretaceous (Myers said angiosperms appeared in the Jurassic which is apparently wrong), which is after fish first appeared, which was in the earlier Silurian period about 200 million years earlier!
