And by that I mean one that believes in separation of church and state, the way many religious people believed for years. I suspect we would disagree on much, but I'll go fishing with this guy any time.

Would that more Christians were like him, but that's not fills up the collection plate. Religions/churches are much like any other business' and they must pander to their congregations/customers. There's nothing wrong with this except when they get greedy, as too many too often do. The late Jerry Falwell is an example as is his brother in avarice, the not-yet-late Pat Robertson.

In short, they must play politics if only because their followers demand it -- the fact they put the idea in said followers minds not withstanding. And in the last few decades, super-conservative idiocy has become a best seller, thank you Falwell and Robertson, et al.
