First, I'd like to telegraph a handful of the topics I'm considering for the future:

  • The Legacy of Marcos

  • Yamashita's Gold

  • Uniformed Men with Guns

  • The Intrinsic Evil of the Feline Race

But for now. . .

In the Philippines, jeepneys and taxis have personal names

Almost all jeepneys and taxi cabs have names painted onto them. About a week ago, as I sat waiting for Bim at a sidewalk restaurant table across from Rizal Park, I jotted down lists of the names of such vehicles. I kept one list of passing jeepneys, another for taxis. I noticed that in general, the jeepneys had the more creative names, and that taxis seemed more often to be named for the wives, girlfriends, or children of the driver.

Jeepney names:

In this deeply religious and superstitious society, many, but not most, jeepneys seem to be dedicated to the Allmighty. Jeepneys in this holy class include:

God Movers
Gift of God
Christian
Glory to God
In God We Trust
Spirit

One "holy" jeepney that I saw was packed with frightened passengers and dangerously careening down a Baguio street. It was named, quite appropriately:

God Help Us.

Other Jeepney names run from the oddly exotic, through the humorous, to the mundane and the bafflingly mysterious:

Rugged
Italian
West Texan
Someone Like You
Garuda
J Hopper
Heartland
McShandy
Aries
Flash-MJ
Philippine III
Speedy Mark
Martini
Stonecutter
D'Only Boy
Swiss
Troubadour
Pilot
Red Wings
Amazing
Power Liner
Street Machine
Ackroyd
Desert Eagle II
MC Joy
Guiding Light
The Only Son
Skanska
Summer Breeze
Goddess of Fortune
Gift of Wisdom
Grand Capo
The Heart Won't Lie
No Turning Back

My own favorite jeepney name was
Evolved.

Taxi names:

Most taxis have simple names, and many just have mysterious initials. Those taxi names that were more interesting to me were:

Royal Sweat
Jap's
Pyrites
Zinc Dust
Cager
Ra-Da-Van
Grand Alban
Malayyo
Narc
Stratus
Princess
Fulfilled Dreams
One Piece
Prime Movers
