I posted this to the SkepTalk mailing list and it created a stir. I thought I'd share it here.

A claim of sugar (specifically fructose) toxicity article and an associated video by Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology. I know that Brian Dunning covered fructose in Skeptoid episode #157 http://skeptoid.com/#8203;episodes/4157 but Dr. Lustig shows that it is a poison (liver toxin), ~30% of fructose converts to fat, and causes leptin to be less effective at telling the brain that you don't need to eat.

The metabolic impact is dose dependent. While I understand why he calls it a toxin, because people basically overdose on refined sugars and he wants to get attention on the subject, I don't think you can really conclude that it is a toxic substance.

The take home message should be, simply, eat less refined sugar. But that isn't anything people don't already know, is it?
