A depressing and apparently factual Cracked article. According to this site that they link to, more and more people are getting poor.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Well, that made my morning. I'm going in my 3rd (or 4th) straight year of serious struggle to stay afloat. I suppose it's my fault for not managing my money better when I was earning an okay income. Not one that would make me rich, but enough so I could make ends meet easily. But spending a year recovering (not earning money and using what i had saved) from back surgery and then straight into this fucking recession has taken its toll.

I don't know if people realize how easy it is to fall into hard times when because like me, things were just fine and there was no reason to think that it could happen. It can happen, it did happen, and it didn't take all that much to make it happen.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

My dad is a journalist and did a fellowship a few years ago to do computer assisted reporting on Census data from the past few decades. He had been expecting to find that the middle class has been shrinking since the 70's or 80's. What he found is that if you adjust cost of living and income for inflation, the middle class has actually been shrinking since the 50's. My dad's educated guess is that the United States got a economic boom from being the only country involved in WWII that didn't suffer severe damage to infrastructure, and thus we got a sudden leg up on everybody else in the world. But now everybody else has caught up and we have no advantage anymore. In other words, yes things have gotten worse, and they aren't going to get better. We're going to have to deal with it.

Meticulous, flawless record keeping is the difference between surviving and having the bank seize your next paycheck.
Yeah. Will and I have been bank-fucked three times in 6 years, by which I mean got sudden hit with a bunch of overdraft fees in a matter of hours amounting to hundreds of dollars. This last time I was so hard up for cash that I actually flipped out at the bank in person and walked out babbling like a crazy person (I will never go back to that branch for that reason.) I then spent lots of time on hold over three subsequent phone calls, asking for supervisors and such just to get the fees brought down to around $100.00. To get that far I resorted to crying on the phone and desperately telling the people on the other line that I had to buy diapers. All because of the order with which they processed a few transactions that all happened in the same day. My cousin just got bank fucked last week - he's on a tight budget and thought a check he deposited had gone through, then ran errands making a few purchases, all of which added fees which equals almost a whole month's rent. And even though the law has changed so they can't just automatically give you overdraft protection, they still try to manipulate people into agreeing to have overdraft protection. When they sent us the letter asking us to agree to keeping it, I laughed and threw it away, but then somehow months later we had the overdraft protection still. I had to call them and demand to know why we still had overdraft protection. They said we had agreed to it, but neither my husband or I remember doing that. I hate banks. They are fucking evil.
