I'm not sure if this is an idea that will fly in an age of talking screen readers, but it won't hurt to ask...

I have a problem and a proposal. I'm a deaf atheist. There are many atheist-related videos that I and other deaf atheists, freethinkers and humanists would like to access, but they're not subtitled or captioned. Some sites like YouTube offer automated subtitles based on voice-recognition technology, but results are generally very poor.

I'm late-deafened and my speech is clear. So here's my deal. I'm looking for blind atheists, freethinkers or humanists who want access to materials that aren't screen reader friendly. I'll be happy to read and record text for you from those sources in exchange for getting transcripts of atheist-related videos that I can use to subtitle those videos. You listen to and type up the transcripts that aren't accessible to me, and I'll read and record materials that aren't accessible to you. We can both share our work with others who can benefit from it.

Intrigued? Contact me at deafscribe@gmail.com. If you know of other forums were I can reach people who might be interested in this, please let me know.

Sounds like a plan, though I don't think you need blind people per se, just someone willing to give you the transcripts. I'll spread the word a bit if you want. I don't download many of those videos myself. Any videos in particular you're looking for?

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Hello DeafScribe, Your post has got me wondering. How would any blind person "read" the forum? Is there software they use? SS

This got me wondering. How would a blind skeptic or any blind person "read" your offer?

There are only two types of religious people, the deceivers and the deceived. SS

Maybe only "legally" blind which doesn't necessarily mean total blindness?

That and there are programs available that allow for text to be verbally "read".
