Yes, folks, Planet X is making the rounds again.

This time (try not to laugh, folks) the object has been identified by the fairly recent discovery of Comet Elenin. Lieder-like people are talking about Nibru/Planet X as being Comet Elenin.

Now for the funny part. Sep 24-26 is around the time they claim that

This body will cause a total eclipse lasting three full days and tip off a pole shift.

Got wind of this one when I saw a blog of someone who encountered one of these wide-eyed true believers checking out of the grocery. Stocking up on candles and the like.

Will someone please slap the living daylights out of Nancy Lieder on national TV?

... But... hold on... Is there any way that's even remotely physically possible? The moon can only make an eclipse last a few minutes, and that's in a small, moving spot!

Has this "Leider" made this kind of claim before?

(Also, it's September now. Should I stock up on candles?)

Coment Elenin won't kill us, says NASA.

The comet will be 90 times farther away from us than the Moon. And since it's less than 5km across, it won't cause any sort of noticeable eclipse. Hell, if the Moon were 90 times farther away than it is, when it transited the Sun we'd only be able to see it doing so with a telescope. Instead of half a degree of arc, it would only take up 20 arcseconds of the sky.

Okay, human vision could theoretically be 16.5 arcseconds, but the Moon would still be lost in the Sun's glare. Comet Elenin is almost 695 times smaller than the Moon, so it would only be a mere 0.029 arcseconds across at its closest approach to the Earth. It would have to be 573 times larger to been seen by the keenest naked-eyed person.
