The bigger problem is the high possibility of a Solar Storm causing another EMP like the one in 1859, http://modernsurvivalblog.com/solar-cycle/solar-superstorm-1859-it-can-happen-again/ . Our military foolishly discovered that we could create an EMP in 1962 when it turned out the lights in Hawaii,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse .

We will likely experience another Solar Maximum in 2012. It would be nice to know that all of our large transformers would not be destroyed by an EMP from such a Solar Storm. It could take years to restore our electric grid and replace those transformers.

Gingrich is not the best Presidential Candidate, but unlike most politicians he is not a complete fool either.

Likely to be the weakest maximum since 1928.

By the way, "the military" has known about EMP from nuclear blasts since the very first tests, 17 years before the accident in Hawaii (which only turned off 300 of "the lights").

It is very 'likely' that no human being actually knows what will actually happen anywhere in 2012. I am concerned that our star will continue sending coronal mass ejections our way from time to time for the next few billion years. Our electric grid did not exist in 1859, but the destruction of the telegraph grid should have been remembered when we became so dependent on the electric grid. The same situation exists with trying to remember a weak EMP from a ground blast and the potential for a much stronger EMP from an air blast or space blast of the much more powerful Hydrogen bomb.

Please read carefully everything under Starfish Prime in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse . The 1859 solar EMP caused significant damage to our primitive telegraph grid across the North American Continent. Now just about everything is controlled by electric motors and electronics. I am not too concerned about changing a few light bulbs. The destruction of huge not easily replaced transformers supplying power to our cities is the problem. That could result in the death of millions of people. This is a very critical problem that we can address. It is a National Problem that requires a government coordinated solution. It is a problem that the FEDERAL government should address before they spend a trillion dollars on any other civil or social engineering shovel ready project.

Pakistan, North Korea, Iran and other of the suburbs of Hell are only a problem because their ruling devils do not care how many of their human citizens would die in a war with us. Their idea is to cause as much human pain and misery as possible.

Emphasis above mine.

Ironically, you don't seem to have read the article carefully yourself, because it states that hydrogen bombs are rather ineffective if producing a large E1-blast (the kind of pulse that is the most damaging to electronics.

I am more concerned with the E3 from a Solar EMP destroying the huge power line transformers on our electric grids. The E3 was the problem in 1859. The printed circuits sensitive to E1 and E2 were not around then. We have satellites that can warn us of Solar EMPs . We could limit the damage and prevent long term destruction of our electric grid.

The Starfish Prime bomb was a standard US 1962 H bomb, small compared to what the crazy Russians were threatening to use. Read the last paragraph in the E1 description in that article. However, the Sun is a much bigger threat than Islamic H bombs.

So, pay attention to certain paragraphs in Wikipedia, but not others?

Droughts have probably killed far more people than all the CMEs put together, and they'll keep doing so for the next few billion years.

Of course, if you want something to really be concerned about, wars are probably more deadly still.

By all means read everything and carefully analyze everything. One of the biggest problems that would result from the destruction of our power grid by an EMP would be the pumping, cleaning, processing of water. Think about EVERYTHING that requires pumps and control by switches.

Iran has been testing their ability to launch missiles from the Caspian Sea, http://buhodle.net/feature/864-new-iranian-missile-may-outflank-us-defenses.html . Now, think oil tanker off the US coast with a serious H bomb for an EMP attack. Iran declared war on us during the Carter administration supposedly for our bad choices during the Eisenhower Administration. However World has always been an attractive idea in that part of the world.

Iran is trying to develop 21st century war technology. The EMP is their way of leveling the battle field. Their mullahs sent waves of unarmed children against the Iraq Army. Life means little to them. However their society cannot survive without our technology. Stop buying their oil and stop providing our technology and they will quickly find themselves in the 7th century. Then their people will see the light.

AdamOne.....

If Iran actually pilfered enough technology to build one viable EMF device, and then succeeded in the difficult task of launching, positioning, and detonating such a device over the USA -- what is your evaluation of the probable retaliation that the USA would launch against Iran?

Particularly if the some batshit-crazy evangelical Republican had become president, and the Congress had degenerated into total Tea-Party control and Absolute Rule by the Ignorant?

Personally, I think a considerable portion of the geography of Iran would suddenly cease to exist and all the virgins in Paradise would instantly become impossibly carnally occupied. Oh, a few million Muslim women, children, infants, dogs and camels would of course be murdered along with the important males; but they don't count for dirt, anyway.

Anyway, the benefit to the world domination aspirations of the Iranian mullahs might be negative, to say the least!

CME hitting us this weekend. Faux News is into it again. Be afraid, very afraid. Talk about flip flopping "it's a lower M class, it might not be that bad" but on the other hand "it could be bad". Thanks for the information Faux News.

Apparently there's a 20% chance of something happening this week end.

But I don't watch Fox news. Why? because Fox News Viewers know less than people who don't watch any news. I don't even watch TV very often. In spite of trying to Google a different source (I tried), every result within the last 24 hours all led me back to this one video. It seems this story was ignored by everyone except Fox, as far as I could tell last night. Which I found interesting but not thought provoking. In spite of being buffeted by this devastating CME throughout this weekend God has spared me the loss of my internet, so far. Isn't god great or what?

bngbuck....

The only EMP device that can create a huge EMF like you describe would be an H bomb. Iran has no A bomb yet so producing an H bomb is well beyond the Iranians for now. Our enemies including Socialist, whether Communist of Fascist, and Muslim countries are likely to attack us and not admit that they did. However an EMP attack should not be hard to trace back to its source, even if it came from an unmarked oil tanker off our coast. An EMP Attack on Iran would be more difficult for us because we actually do not want to plunge the entire world into darkness and start a 3rd World War. Iran would love to have us turn out the lights for about a third of the Earth. Their Mullahs are Satanic Fanatics. However the Socialist countries might do something that idiotic to get us to attack Iran.

There is no doubt that the USA could do a localized EMP attack on Iran from 1 submarine. Iran would then be easy to conquer. We could them break up Iran into zones for each of the different groups that desire their own country. Iran may be worse than Iraq in that sense. The real problem is that the Muslims hate each other and will continue to fight amongst themselves until they allow Christians and Jews to live amongst them and teach them how to behave. It should be obvious to them that even if Muslims had conquered the Earth and killed every non-Muslim, they would still be killing each other.

I would rather have the USA spend around $1 Billion to harden the grid against an EMP from ANY source, human or natural. Then we would have sufficient time to respond as Christians to a Muslim EMP attack by showing love to our enemies and by freeing them from their slavery to Religious Jihad and Mullah Warlords. If we get a Solar EMP then we can show love to those countries whose power grids are destroyed. That is what we should be doing. It is the smart and cost effective thing to do.

I have degrees in Physics and IT and consider myself to be a Christian. I have ancestors who were Christians and American Military Heroes since 1775. One of my ancestors went to Washington and lobbied for an Enlisted Men's Retirement System for 20 years after he was forced to retire as a Major General 56 years after he joined our military. He succeeded in getting the government to create the retirement system for enlisted men in 1937 the year he died. He was not paid to do any of that.

And there, AdamOne, you lost all credibility you could ever dream to have here at SFN.
Barely a clue what political ideologies are about, except what you've been spoon-fed to believe by Faux News. Realise you also labelled me you enemy. With people like you voting in your country, no wonder it's going down the shit-drain.

MSNBC and CNN my be pseudo intellectual, but Fox News is filed under the gengre "parody", not news. Fox News has liberals on, in the same way that 50s and 60s Hollywood Movies had a token black guy: someone to point at and laugh.

Easy now guys.......

Think before anyone hits the next "post" button. This forum is about an exchange of ideas and beliefs. No matter how much they differ and they will,,,,, remember while we might disagree, let us not be disagreeable.

As we come into the new year the best thing we all can do is not forget the possible learning experiences we could have had this past year and how we could benefit from them into the future. Including how we can behave publicly throughout the coming year. Cheers! SS

No. Really. More than one study has shown that Fox news viewers are the least informed and in one study, less informed than those who watch no news at all. Fox is the propaganda arm of the Republican party. They are told what to say and what to promote. Fox is one dimensional. And they are caught lying regularly. You have drunk deeply from the kool aid well that is Fox news.
