Great, except as far as I know, it was mandatory to be part of the Hitler Youth back then. Ratti didn't have any choice. I have no evidence that he liked any of that stuff, much less considering that nazi hat to be one of his "favourites". Other than that, spot on.

I know, I know...it's comedy.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

In this lighter venue, I didn't feel an obligation in this context to do the whole evidence thing. I would say that nobody (except him) knows all the details of Ratzinger's time in the Hitler Youth.

But in regard to his the Pope's Hitler Youth background, I was careful to limit my implications to him having "enjoyed" the "obedience and idealism". I think that's a fair, even conservative guess, given his later life in the Church, an organization that delivers authority and motivational doctrine in spades. To say nothing of ritual, unquestioning belief, uniforms, public processions and oaths. I really do feel that the Hitler Youth probably served, along with his seminary schooling, as a prep school for the Pope's authoritarian personality.

I actually knew a former Hitler Youth, an old guy named Johann. He, like Ratzinger, had been made a "flak helper," manning antiaircraft guns. Johann helped serve an 88mm anti-aircraft gun at Hamburg. The Nazi ideology of the old bastard I knew was still burning brightly in the 1990's. He must have picked up most of that in his years in Hitler Youth. That indoctrination must have been intense.
