The religious needed a study to prove this?

I am expecting some wing nut to claim that the study was flawed because he can't think of atheists as human.

I think at least part of the reason for that is that we atheists cannot simply look to dogma and authority for moral guidance, but must personally be responsible for our actions. No cookie-cutter morality is available to us. We must wrestle with the issues, and get down and dirty with morality.

Devout church-goes are probably potentially as compassionate as atheists, but they have had their moral sensitivities short-circuited by "higher authority" -- usually pastors, rabbis and mullahs who tell them what to do, and what "charities" to give to.

Of course, what the sheep are instructed to do is based upon ancient patriarchal religions and iron-age cruelty. And the so-called charities recommended by the pastors, when not outright money-grabbing frauds, tend strongly toward the "good work" of saving souls, rather than saving lives. But the flock is saved the hardship of moral uncertainty and having to think.
