The first hint in seven minutes, five seconds? Must be a record.

Ray Bradbury.

Something wrong this way comes.

Yup, figured nobody'd know the guy just by looking at him, so gave a rather weak clue right away. Sometimes I do go clue-crazy, though.

I know who it is, and I've not been envolved at all in this pick. So is it okay if I play?

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Okay by me, but bear in mind that I may void your win if others object.

Screw them!

It's Phillip Tobias.

And by the way. Your clues led directly to him. Easy!

Congrats, Kil! Yes, it's Phillip Valentine Tobias, one of the greats of paleoanthropology and an expert "bone man." He's the guy who described and named Homo habilis or "handy man" (aka "dexterous fellow." Scroll down there to see the image I used as the background of the OP).

Tobias was a South African and a life-time bachelor. During the rule of South Africa's minority racist apartheid regime, "He was also an activist for the eradication of apartheid and gave numerous anti-apartheid speeches at protest rallies and also to academic audiences."

Tobias trained many young paleontologists at South Africa's famed Serkfontein Caves, and helped to discredit the infamous Piltdown Man fraud.

More on Phillip Tobias in this NY Times obituary.
