While most serious campaigns on both sides use campaign trackers — staffers whose job is to record on video every public appearance and statement by an opponent — House Democrats are taking it to another level. They’re now recording video of the homes of GOP congressmen and candidates and posting the raw footage on the Internet for all to see.

I don't know that this is particularly safe. Any thoughts?

They should not give away the address in the videos. (Though that is probably legally public knowledge.) But knowing how their representatives live may be a valid political point that voters should know. Like, just how tuned into their constituents are the GOP Congresscritters?

Bad move on several levels...it resembles stalking, if it actually is not stalking itself.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

When Mitt's La Jolla, California home was shown in the news, I don't remember stalking being mentioned. But I suspect that will be the rap, as this time it's many politicians being exposed and in an organized way. This is almost certainly legal, and if done right, no real threat to the palatial mansions, the armies of liveried household servants, the menacingly uniformed armed guards, or to the GOP Congress Members, their families, prostitutes, or lovers.

Looks like maybe the thinking is that they can shoot the footage and by making it public, disavow any ownership and that way PACs and other groups who can't receive benefits from the campaigns can have it for their ads. It hasn't really been limited to the homes though, they followed one congresswoman while grocery shopping for some reason, found a staffer essentially staking out an opponent's home with a camera, etc.

Politically, the house shots will certainly be used in the ridiculous attack ads we see every cycle. "X has a big house, he obviously doesn't care about you!" It's really nonsense, it's not as if very rich members of Congress don't represent different political positions, but this is to be expected and I don't see a safety problem.

But I think there's a problem with giving out addresses to these homes when people can easily find out when the target isn't home, when there may only be children home, etc.
