Edit: First, the replacement image:

Please note: Photo of the man on the left (below) has been shown to almost certainly be falsely attributed as a "Kurdish atheist activist." The man in the photo is almost certainly Majid Kavoosifar, an alleged bank robber and murderer of an Iranian judge. At this time, I am working to fix my unintended spreading of misinformation. My apologies!

I am so spreading this around...also, here's another example, from PZ Myers' site. There'a a link there where you can send emails to him.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Thank you very much,

I think the above graphic is probably the best I've ever put together, though no part of it was really my original work. I simply saw the photo of Husayn Khudhri and was amazed at his calm joy at greeting those he knew, one last time, prior to being yanked up by his neck with a cable by a crane. And then I mentally compared that image to Kirk Cameron playing the phony "Christian martyr" role in a recent interview. The comparison disgusted me, and it occurred to me to put the two men side-by-side. I'm in awe of Khudhri's atheist bravery, sickened by Cameron's gay-bullying cowardice.

I hope the graphic gets freely and widely distributed!

Thanks for the link, too!

That image isn't of an atheist activist. He's Majid Kavoosifar (Daily Mail. WARNING: shows him hanging dead) who was convicted of assassinating a judge (BBC source with pre-hanging photo). Here's a source with more information about Kavoosifar (not sure of the writer's political affiliation or how balanced this is -- he's skeptical of the official Iranian story and implies a coverup, but doesn't say Kavoosifar has anything to do with atheism or wasn't at least involved with the assassination).

Thanks, and welcome to SFN, jpf! I'll try looking into that.

Indeed, jpf, it seems I have a problem here. I should have researched the story of "Khudhri" as well as I'd researched Cameron, before I posted to OP! My apology to all.

The "Husayn Khudhri" story is quite widespread on the Internet, but seems to be the same brief account repeated over and over, with no sourcing attached. The Mail and BBC links seem to be valid in pointing out that the person I have in my image was the alleged judge-killer and bank robber, Majid Kavoosifar. (I agree, there's something fishy about the official Iranian story on Kavoosifar, but that doesn't excuse or fix my unintentional spreading of disinformation.)

I'll be trying to fix this, today. Thanks again!

There, I fixed it. Kinda-sorta. Lesson agonizingly repeated: Skeptics get suckered, too. I think that pretty much all sides on Iranian issues are using a lot of disinformation.

Thank you once again for the correction, jpf!

Kirk Cameron's complaining about being persecuted is laughable when people in the world are really being persecuted.

It's almost like some hypothetical woman for example, complaining about a guy hitting on her in a lift, when there are women in Iran etc. who aren't even allowed to drive. Talk about first world problems.

And there's a perfectly good thread for that discussion.

Yes but that thread has nothing to do with Kirk Cameron. I linked the two topics, so this one is perfectly good too.

Nor does this thread have anything to do with Rebecca Watson. Probably bringing up Kirk Cameron over in that thread would be a diversion to the discussion there. But if you think you can do something interesting by contrasting the two people, I invite you to start a new thread, perhaps in General Skepticism.

But not here, please. I'm staying out of the Watson discussion, having previously had my ass handed to me in it due to my ignorance on the subject. And that discussion will stay out of the forum I moderate, as a personal preference.

That's actually a fair point I think, and one to make here and not elsewhere, if I've interpreted correctly: worse things happening elsewhere doesn't mean we can't complain about legitimate, but less severe, wrongs. But I haven't actually seen any wrong to Kirk at all, being "subjected to an unreasonable amount of scrutiny" simply isn't being wronged as a public figure when the scrutiny is about public statements (and this makes it reasonable even).

Edit: I guess he was saying neither one was really wronged and should stop complaining, so the above didn't really apply.

Maybe. But, just as I chose to lick my wounds and stay the f out of the Rebecca Watson thread, I'm choosing to keep that topic out of this thread. I want to both run and hide. I apologize, as this is not a matter of principle. It's just a personal choice. The Admins may overrule my decision if they like, but I think I'm not really censoring by politely asking people to take that particular issue elsewhere in SFN.

I don't always do this kind of "stick to the topic" moderating, but when I do, it's for no good reason.
