It just might be the case.

Wind Turbine Syndrome (WTS) is the term that has been used to describe the blanket of symptoms reported — insomnia, headaches, nausea, stress, poor ability to concentrate and irritability. Numerous studies have been conducted regarding wind turbine noise and its potential effect on people, with the majority of those studies concluding that there are no health effects from the noise. Other studies have stated that the health effects and general mental state of the people that live around wind turbines is determined by 'annoyance' — how the people feel about the wind turbines, whether they see them as an unnecessary or disruptive intrusion, whether they find them aesthetically pleasing or not, and whether they directly benefit from them financially. In some cases, it has been suggested that WTS is psychogenic — that it is spread simply by raising concerns and worry about the subject — which is being called the 'nocebo effect', a negative placebo effect.

The jury is still out on this issue, though. There is an increasing number of studies being published in the past two years that point towards adverse health effects of low-frequency sound, or 'infrasound' — sound with a frequency of lower than 20 Hertz, the 'normal' limit of human hearing. There are other studies that have come out over the past two years that also reinforce the role of 'annoyance' in this issue. Sample size and 'statistical power' may be a limiting factor in how valid these studies are, and there also may be a high potential for biased reporting, depending on the source of the study. Health Canada announced in June that it will be conducting its own study to determine what, if any, health effects can be attributed to wind turbines. The results will be released in 2014.

It causes a wide range of vague, difficult to measure symptoms that can have multiple other causes? Wow, it's right up there with MSG and WiFi

Wait. What's up with MSG? MSG is awesome! Every bag of Cheetos has lots of it.

Mmmmmmm...

Maybe Mab has some comments of this. Wasn't it infra-sound from the ventilation/AC/heating system that gave him and his then-significant-other/now-wife so much suffering up until a year of so ago? A problem that was eventually -- BINGO -- fixed by experts?

Indeed it was.

Low frequency noise from the ventilation system, just below the perception threshold for me but my wife could detect it. It started with the perception of vibration, which wouldn't let her relax. This interfered with sleeping, so much as keeping her awake without getting more than 3 hrs per night. After a fortnight she was a wreck.
This stress caused by the infra-sound is accumulating, and staying away from the apartment for a few days mitigated the problem, in the beginning. (Later on, her stress needed more and more time to dissipate)
We also conducted blind tests which meant that the machine causing the infra sound was turned off for random days during a week, and she nailed them.

So there is no doubt in my mind that wind mills may cause health-related problems. How much, and the mechanisms behind the symptoms... that's another question which I will leave up to scientists to find out.

Our problems were solved when the health department ordered the condo-board to hire an acoustics engineer to measure and examine the ventilation system. He concluded that there was actually an infra-sound coming from the ventilation, and suggested changes. The fan was swapped out, and the vent-ducts were adjusted so they weren't directly cast into the concrete superstructure (thus allowing for vibrations to conduct into the walls and floors in our apartment).

Today we're living mostly happily ever after, waiting for an apology from the board for not believing us in the first place.

Kudos. By your experiments, you raised your complaint above the usual run-of-the-mill unfounded impressions. Maybe if this weird thing actually works, it might mitigate infra-sound. Might save a few birds from bludgeoning, too.

Yeah. Maybe they can put that knowledge to use in in those windmills to change the sound a bit.

I have yet to find a video of a demonstration of an actual device. Hmmmmm.

It looks about as efficient for turning in the wind as a brick wall.

"We are all connected; to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, to the rest of the universe atomically."

Supposedly, it doesn't turn at all, but instead wobbles in an oscillation which pumps hydraulic fluid, which in turn runs a generator.

It's going to face the wind, since it's built just like a weather cock.

Right. I think the idea is that it is pushed off a windward orientation, and then the wind vortices that are then produced behind the "sail" push it back the opposite way. Hydraulic pistons are operated by the oscillation in both directions, and the hydraulic flow powers the generator.

As Thor noted, the lack of any video showing its actual operation is worrisome.

Monosodium glutamate is an acid substance from seaweed. I agree it makes food taste great like chicken and pretty much everything but for me, it's just like aspartame, they both make my elbo joints and muscles hurt at night and gives my stiffness during the day. When I avoid them I getz no pain. Call me stupid , call me crazy, while it's not very scientific it works for me thank you very much. If as you get older you start hurting try avoiding them and see if that doesn't help.

Another thing, whenever I eat to much processed food my body starts hurting and it stops when I cook from scratch, in like my pain goes away. I find the coalition amazing and wonder if it's not bullshit but I'm not going to argue with being pain free. So I wallow in the bullshit.

One thing I found out as I got older and that is young people have no idea what it's like to get old but with luck they'll find out.

Ok, so if the placebo effect can be shown to be a real affect to some degree, is it that far of a stretch that a "sugar pill" in any form can cause negative health?

I see what you meant now. Overall, the contraption faces the wind, but there are no blades to turn, nor does the round, sat-dish-like sail spin. It is supposed to just wobble.
