I'm always skeptical when I read about the perpetually up-and-coming political force of atheists, agnostics, and the like in American politics. Thus, when I read this-- suggesting that politicians may want to court the atheist (etc.) vote, I wonder.

Perhaps with more data from elections in 2014 and 2016, I'll be more convinced that our subset of voters is big enough to matter.

I'm of two minds about this. It would be nice to have politicians listen to us for a change, but it would be nicer if they weren't doing it, as I suspect they would be, just out of political expediency.

The numbers might be there, or at least be approaching a decent size of the population, but don't think that it's a united enough bloc to make pandering to it politically expedient, and don't particularly expect it to become one.

Not when sizable chunks of us are libertarians or liberals who are generally appalled at the other chunks' ideas of good public policy.

Well, there appear to be few social conservatives among us, so Democratic candidates could make broad appeals to atheists on issues like abortion access, LBGT rights, etc. But on economic issues, we're basically split.

Agreed, I think Republicans would be fully marginalizing themselves among atheists by rejecting major scientific fields of study, opposition to LGBT rights/medical research, and general anti-intellectualism if it weren't for economic issues. I think the latter favor more prevalently in political choice.
