I think a large percentage of us know the feeling of finding something really interesting, posting about it here somewhere, and then finding that no or few other members seemed to feel the same way, leaving your OP stillborn.
So, what threads have you started that didn't take off like you thought they would, leaving your OP unanswered, or garnering just a couple of "that's nifty" replies? What threads have you seen that you thought would have started up a large discussion, but flopped instead?
I ask - and put this in the General Skepticism folder - because I'm interested in discussing the possible reasons why a thread failed to fly. I'm wondering if there's a general "forum psychology" which can predict which threads will do well, and which will do poorly (perhaps I should move this to "Social Issues").
(Oh, and I am specifically not asking about threads with tons of posts which probably should have died a much earlier death. There are lots of those, and most of them include discussion of why they should have ended on page one.  )

Well I for one find the dynamics of the global warming trend ominous and disturbing to say the least, personally I find this the most important topic for the world today as the potential consequences are so enormous. The numerous fields of study it crosses and seemingly endless supply of new reports confirming the subject, should draw more interest IMO. Edit: the pentgon seems to think so too.. story

BigPapaSmurf, did you have a particular thread in mind, or are you discouraged by the lack of global-warming content in the forums (and on the site) overall?

Oh I made a 'lets make a permanent global warming file thread', but interest wasnt there.
Really I dont know if one belongs because the only fools who dont believe it are Bush Admin and the US energy companies. Plus some influential witch doctors in Africa... |

I don't think the fact of global warming is disputed here. The cause is under discussion, but not its existance. The threads that produce the most traffic tend to be those which are disputed by members, not ones which forward a concept which is agreed upon. Posting to those threads seems to be a bit like pontificating rather than actually contributing to the life of a thread.
verlch's posts (shudder) are prime examples. So was the PIPS discussion.
Posts that hit a consensus tend to die rather quickly. It's happened to a bunch of my posts and I didn't take it personally. It's just the nature of this particular online community.

Val's right. Contention makes for the longest discussions.
I've put up a fair amount of topics that got little or no response. Mostly they were sort of a news posting and I wasn't expecting much; just passing along some info.
