Even this page shows the album cover to be "X96," and the British Postal codes make the cover out to be "VNIT." That same page has the ITA1 code saying the cover reads "EYOG." Odd that they don't agree. That page also shows Murray Code, which became International Telegraph Alphabet #2 (ITA2), and the cover also says "X96" in that, too. Huh. I can't find any five-bit coding wherein that album cover reads "X&Y" like it should.
(Oh, ASCII is also known as International Telegraph Alphabet #5.)

Well, I decoded the message 20 minutes ago, except for the number of minutes and one other digit (not enough info to get them from context).
However, I've only got the faintest clue as to what rules were used to encode it, as there isn't enough text for a really good sampling. I know that some of the bits are flipped, based on what the first three bits of a symbol are, but that's it. If there's a reason behind it, I can't see it (the two charts I've got - one for 001 symbols and one for 110 symbols {only one symbol starts 000} - are only 34% full). |

In a way. The division of NASA which controls the Voyager missions has been told they need to cut $20 million of their $70-something-million budget. The Voyagers, at $4.3 million a year, and not offering science directly related to the populace (the same NASA division is handling Earth-orbit satellites to measure global warming, for example), seem to be poised for termination. |
