Dave-- a question asked for my edification. I notice that this new mechanism isn't 'grandfathered' into the system. For instance, here (from for just a few days ago), the quotes are old style. Why is that?

Because I have no desire to edit every post ever made here.

The old posts are stored with the old style quotes. The "translation" from [quote] to the HTML that gives the quotes their appearance only occurs when a post is initially submitted, or previewed, or edited. The translation does not occur every time a post is viewed (if it did, this forum would be slooooow).

To demonstrate this, go back to one of your old posts in which you quote something, edit it (but don't change anything), and then either post it back or just preview it. You'll see that the new-style quotes will replace the old ones.

Ah, I see. That explains it. (Though I'm disappointed that you don't want to edit every post here...)

If we really wanted to do that, we'd probably write a database script to automagically fix everything, even the archives. I think the risk outweighs the benefits.

I agree; and it's ultimately not important. There ARE problems with the archives that SHOULD get fixed, but that's something altogether different...

Oh really? Let's take it from the top, then...:

1. Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky,
Little boxes, little boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

2. And the people in the houses
All go to the university,
And they all get put in boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
And there's doctors and there's lawyers
And business executives,
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

3. And they all play on the golf-course,
And drink their Martini dry,
And they all have pretty children,
And the children go to school.
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university,
And they all get put in boxes
And they all come out the same.

4. And the boys go into business,
And marry, and raise a family,
And they all get put in boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.
-- Malvina Reynolds

That was Reynold's take on Daly City, just south of San Francisco, Fil. Tightly packed due to high real estate prices.

When deciding to change things, we did take into consideration the fact that none of our eyes are getting any younger.
