You know, life is depressing enough without this happening: Science Foul

Brian Benson, an eighth-grade student who won first place in the Life Science/Biology category for his project “Creation Wins!!!,” says he disproved part of the theory of evolution. Using a rolled-up paper towel suspended between two glasses of water with Epsom Salts, the paper towel formed stalactites. He states that the theory that they take millions of years to develop is incorrect.

“Scientists say it takes millions of years to form stalactites,” Benson said. “However, in only a couple of hours, I have formed stalactites just by using paper towel and Epsom Salts.”

So, besides doing a (bad) geology "experiment" in the LIFE SCIENCE/BIOLOGY section, he and his sodding teachers have no idea that geologists know that some formations take a long time to form, while others don't.

So many things wrong here.

EDIT:
Found some other stuff from the Internet Infidels site about the school:

http://www.picapatriots.org/bsv.html

From their curriculum page

A Beka Book Publications is the nation's leading producer of Bible based textbooks for Christian schools. It presents a Christian worldview and integrates Biblical principles into every subject. Although A Beka will be the primary curriculum for next year, the Academic Excellence Committee will continue to review curriculum on a subject by subject basis, in consultation with other Christian Schools, to maintain the highest academic standards possible. In that regard, the Academic Excellence Committee has elected to use Saxon Math as its math curriculum.

Ok, now let's look at the Beka site:

http://www.abeka.com/

Read through the stuff they offer.

Now, cry.

On the other hand, if there were more xian schools like this, those from the secular schools would get a strong advantage in employment, especially when it comes to the sciences! Though they may have to leave the states to get those jobs!

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

I predict a bright future for this innovative, young scholar in either stand-up comedy or as a career lab rat. Or conceivably, head of the Republican Party -- it's all the same thing.

Well, the good news is that this is a private Christian school. If the "Cretin Wins!!!" Science Fair project is entered into an interscholastic competition, it should be shot down as the unscientific propaganda it is.

I was surprised to find approximately several-inch-long stalactites growing in the BART subway tunnels at a San Francisco station around 1980. So they can grow faster than I'd thought, I mused, and then dismissed it from my mind.

I notice that this benighted Christian school teaches "history" from a text, "... tracing man's history back to the Garden of Eden." So sad. With such a deliberate effort to teach ideological woo-woo nonsense instead of scholarship, such fake schools should not be accredited by the states in which they exist, and their graduates should be required to go back to (as Dawkins might remark) a "proper" school for another twelve years of remediation. The administrators and teaching staff should be prosecuted not having registered as reason-offending pedagogues in their state.

Doesn't say much for the quality of the school's science program, that's for sure.

And their parents are paying about three grand per year, it seems. A bargain for private school, but a rip-off if their science fair is any indication.

And by the way, since when does evolution talk about stalactites. Idiots.

Obviously they aren't distinguishing between the YE and the C in YEC.

Clearly. Though I guess to be fair, by any reasonable definition, "creationism" includes fields like geography and cosmology, even if evolutionary biology is its prime sparring partner. Any, uh, legitimate creationist museum and/or exhibit is going to include attacks not only on the conventional science-based views of evolution, but also of the earth's geology, paleontology, and so on. So in a sense, the little ignorant kid who won this prize wasn't being dishonest in naming his creation/geology contest. Rather, he's just stupid for thinking his side "won" the argument.
