From Bad Astronomy

The South Carolina (motto: "First to Secede!") governing body is maybe not so much the bastion of science and reality-based thinking. But now, as reported in The Charleston Post & Courier, they join Texas in what I can only think of as utter stupidity:

State lawmakers shot down a request for extra financial help for low-income students who will attend South Carolina's public colleges and universities next year.

Meanwhile, they approved $2.5 million to help low-income students attend Bob Jones University, a private school in Greenville.

BJ University, huh? What a horrible school that is. Just take a look at their female dress code.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

This quote from the article is a lie:

That's right. In South Carolina, if you are poor or middle class and want to be educated, you can either do without, or go to a private school like BJU where you'll learn the Earth is 6000 years old!

The article says they shotdown extra funding for the public schools. There is still funding for the low income student in South Carolina.

From the news article:

The State Commission on Higher Education had requested $10 million to increase grants for some needy students attending public colleges and universities. Last year, low-income public school students received, on average, $1,158 in grants while their private-school counterparts received $3,100, nearly three times as much.

I guess you can decide for yourself if the low income student is not "doing without."

That's C'lanky for you! The Bob Jones circle-jerk all but owns the state, or at least manages to get their fingers into a lot of political pies involving state money.

North Carolinians are called: "Tarheels." South Carolinians are called: "Unfortunate." We have dirty feet, and they don't get even that little bit.
