From the Washington Post:

By MATT SEDENSKY
The Associated Press
Wednesday, September 5, 2007; 6:56 PM

MIAMI -- The Rev. D. James Kennedy, a pioneering Christian broadcaster and megachurch pastor whose fiercely conservative worldview helped fuel the rise of the religious right in American politics, died Wednesday. He was 76.

Kennedy died at his home in Fort Lauderdale from complications of a heart attack he suffered on Dec. 28, according to Kristin Cole, a spokeswoman for Kennedy's Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church. He had not been seen publicly since the heart attack, and his retirement was announced Aug. 26.

PZ Myers talks about it here.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

I used to listen to his radio show--"Truths That Transform"-- often, and call in to get whatever free stuff he was offering. I wrote lots of letters critiquing whatever lame stance he was taking, but never heard much from him. He was entertaining and I'm sure his zombie-like congregation and radio-listeners will miss him.

Also, rather unnoticed, Norma Gabler has died.

Small loss. Kennedy was one of the main movers & shakers (don't ask me of what) in the Terri Shaivo(sp?) uproar.

As PZ has pointed out, he was a willful and blatant ignoramus spreading the infection everywhere he went.

"Mrs. Gabler, always with a smile and careful, precise diction, usually testified at textbook hearings rather than her shyer husband, Mel" -- although the current president of ERA told the Times, "Mr. Gabler wore the pants in that family, and Mrs. Gabler wanted it that way."
Yeah, but he probably had lacy silks under them, and she probably had a strap-on under the bed.

The welcome death of D. James Kennedy brings the infamous "Land Letter" to mind. This was a letter sent to President Bush on October 3, 2002, outlining a "Christian" theological rationale for a "just war" invasion of Iraq.

What Would Jesus Do? As the Land Letter has it, he'd probably lie to his people, and kill Iraqis.

The scoundrels who signed the loathsome Land Letter were:

Richard Land -- Dominionist. Author of Land Letter, President of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, Southern Baptist Convention.

Bill Bright -- Founder of Campus Crusade for Christ. Dead, 2003!

D. James Kennedy -- President of Coral Ridge Ministries. Dead, 2007!

Chuck Colson -- A primary Nixon Watergate conspirator, ex-con and founder of Prison Fellowship Ministries.

Carl D. Herbster -- President of the American Association of Christian Schools.

I only hope the surviving three may themselves die soon, the bloody-handed hypocrites.

Here's a link to the text of the Land Letter.
