You don't need to know the language. I stumbled across these (and others) over a week ago. My wife - who is studying Japanese - tells me that Japanese game shows are very bizarre. Of course, it'll be obvious to the careful observer that not all of these are "game shows" in the traditional sense. And, according to Wikipedia, the segment below listed as "Tongue-Twisters" was featured by Keith Olbermann as "Reason Number 261 (of 527) why Japanese television is better than ours."

Human Tetris:
Tongue-Twisters:Can't Laugh:Silent Library:Hot water, bouncy girl (may not be work safe):Door Runner:Tilted Floor Cleaning:I'm sure there are other gems to be found out there.

Thanks for those links, Dave. "Fascinating" seems to be the best single word. I get feelings that vary from thinking of Japan as a very sick society, to it being a wonderfully creative and playful one. I'm unsure which extreme is correct -- maybe both.

Human Tetris was pretty cool, and not nearly as sadistic as some of the other stuff. I was riveted each time a new moving "wall" came out from behind the curtain, wondering what shape of hole it would have, and how the player would cope.

Most of the other "games" appeared sadistic and often quite dangerous. In our more litigious society, they would probably be impossible on TV, and would cause all sorts of (justified!) outcries for their cruelty, chauvinism, etc.

Anybody remember that show on Fox called "Banzai"? It was a game show (of sorts) based on shows that air in Japan. It had Japanese hosts. It also had famous celebrities in contests (sometimes unwittingly), weird stunts (like those on "Jackass") and interesting "quizzes" (once, they had two men in a room, smoking. You were to guess which was was a former punk rocker based on clues).

Anyway, I really miss that show!

You missed the best one, Dave:

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

That show is awesome. They still have reruns of it over here.

Was Banzai anything like MXC?
MXC can be described with 4 words: "Iron Chef" meets "Jackass".
I've seen some of MXC, as it used to follow Star Trek on Spike TV. "Door Runner" looks like it'd come from MXC, but it doesn't have the dubbing.

Not really. There wasn't a group of people that would be eliminated one by one. Most of the time, the contestants were the TV audience themselves (needless to say, unless you were betting against your spouse, you don't win anything).

The host would set up a scenario and you were given a chance to vote who would win in certain contests. Other times, you were given certain blocks of time to guess when something was to happen. For example, you'll have Mr. Shake Hands Man shaking hands with a celebrity while the celebrity would talk about something. You would guess if the celebrity will pull their hand away from Mr. Shake Hands Man in 1-15 seconds, 16-30 seconds, etc. If you voted for the second block, and the celebrity pulls their hand away in 23 seconds, then you won.

Another contest had Rick Wakeman of Yes and the keyboardist of Heaven 17 play every key on a piano. You had to guess who would do it the fastest. As mentioned before, there were two men sitting in a room smoking cigarettes. You had to guess who the ex-punk rocker was. Mr. Shake Hands Man would walk around them with a look of scrutiny on his face and you had to guess which guy was real based on their actions and Mr. Shake Hands Man's gestures (needless to say, some of his actions were designed to deceive).

Other than that, you would have to guess who would win a downhill shopping cart race and other competitions of that ilk.
