John David R. Atchison, a Florida Assistant US Attorney, had been arrested Sunday in an Internet pedophilia sting operation, after allegedly trying to arrange having sex with a five-year-old girl through the girl's supposed mother.
Atchison attempted to hang himself in his cell, but was stopped in time, after another inmate called for guards:DETROIT - A federal prosecutor from Florida who authorities say flew to Michigan for a sexual encounter with a 5-year-old girl tried to hang himself in his jail cell Thursday but was stopped in time, the sheriff said.
John D.R. Atchison, 53, used a sheet in an attempted hanging around 4 a.m., said Sanilac County Sheriff Virgil Strickler.
Another inmate yelled out to jailers, who kept Atchison from hurting himself, Strickler said |

Why do these guys never try to hang themselves before trying to hurt any children? It's only ever after they get caught and can't face the music. Fucking cowards.

He sure should have been watched. After he already hanged himself unsuccessfully. Sounds like some guard was taking a nap.

As disgusting as pedophilia is, I'm also a little uncomfortable with these kinds of entrapment methods used in law enforcement.
Am I the only one who feels that way? |

Depends on how its done. Entrapment to me is when you get someone to do something they ordinarily wouldn't do. I can't see how that would apply in this case. Was he not already on the prowl? Did the police use "undue encouragement" to get him to fly to Detroit?
I'll admit, though, that I don't know where exactly the boundry is between "sting" and "entrapment". |
