I thank SA Smith (ERV) (Behe's "Mean Girl") for linking to this 49-minute video interview. Craig Venter is leading a large and successful team which is working, among other things, on creating the first synthetic organism.
This back-and-forth discussion was almost completely understandable even to me, but I suspect it's not too dumbed down for experts in the field.
There are also links on the page above to text discussions by Venter.
