When pirates seized the bridge of the freighter Dai Hong Dan off Somalia, they got more trouble than they counted on.

As a US warship approached and ordered the pirates to surrender, the North Korean crew rallied in the ship's engineering spaces and counterattacked. By the time the battle was over, two pirates were dead, and five were captured. Three wounded North Korean sailors are being treated aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS James E. Williams.

Maybe there are no diplomatic relations between North Korea and the US, but there was certainly a bit of comradely cooperation between sailors in the waters off the Horn of Africa.

Can't hurt, that's for sure.

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

Yeah, Pirates are a major problem off the coast of Africa, my cousin just finished an anti-pirate stint off Tunisia.

Jeeze, the Barbary pirates are still active, too?

Well, Im not sure they are affiliated with the Pasha leaders of Barbary c1500-1700, but they are back in action with much crappier boats. Really the Ethiopia-Somalia area is far more dangerous, I reccomend avoiding it with your yacht.

You know, this incident reminds me of James Clavell's Taipan. The main character was merchant-adventurer Dirk Struan, a predatory Imperialist bastard, but a smart one that the reader can sympathize with. One of his greatest enemies was a guy named Tyler Brock, a rival merchant.

These guys were ready to fight one another to the death on the drop of a hat. But anytime Chinese pirates or patriots threatened the merchants as a class, all the contentious merchants united instantly. (Brock immediately bowed to the leadership of Struan, because he knew Struan was smarter than he was.)

Likewise, the tradition of the sea is for sailors to assist one another, against storms, fires, and pirates. It's great to see the way the US and North Korean sailors kept up this vital tradition.

(Hey! Thanks for the tribute in your sig, BigPapa!)
