A while ago, I was cruising through www.worth1000.com, because I love looking at their contest entries. For those not familiar, Worth1000 has photoshop contests, where contestants create unusual images with photoshop, usualyl cleverly altering existing photos.

They had a contest where the theme was weird archarology once, and one of the entries was the excavation of a huge human skeleton. It was clever, but there were much more memorable entries, such as angels, devils, minotaurs, and cyclops.

So I was cruising newsgroups some time after, and saw a link to a Creationist website that claimed to have proof of the giants from Genesis -- and of course, it was the photo I saw at worth1000!

Our buddy Kent Hovind was even fooled by a similar hoax, as well as the discovery institute. I'd love to see if we could organize a similar contest to see who can set up an anual hoaxing event, where people send in doctored photos to put on a special website that will purport to have "amazing archaeological discoveries that challenge Evolution!"

Not only would it be really fun, but we could build up a big list of incidents where we hoax the ID/Creationist crowd, and make it available so that everyone can see how gullible these folks can be. Not that we actualyl NEED something like that, but like I said -- it could be fun!

Sorry, but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don't feel dropping to their level is a good idea. That said, I love me some photoshop action.

Say, wasn't this one of HYBRID's "proofs" of the Nephilem(sp?), or some damned thing? I seem to recall getting into a long and profane (on my part) head-banging over it with him. It wuz fun....

Psycho, I think that the Creationarians can leave themselves open to ridicule well enough all by themselves -- they'd fuck up a free lunch. Howsomever, April the Oneth fast approachth, and Dave's link to Onyate Man has to be one of the best gags ever! I'd love to see someone top it.

I agree with BPS. Photo-shopping giants and the like just to make fun of Creationists is perfectly acceptable. It is however an added and ironic bonus when the Creationist takes that image and tries to post it as evidence. But that should not be the intent.

It's a lot like car crashes in NASCAR.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I don't know. Hoaxes have a long and storied tradition among skeptics. Just be sure to reveal the gag at some point though, or you might end up creating a monster.

I love the idea, and have been trying to think of a good hoax for a very long time. I'll try to figure one out. I'll be moving soon, though, and the April 1st date may have to pass without anything much from me. But we have others her quite as capab;e, and perhaps with ready ideas.

This kind of thing, if nothing else, should serve both as an object lesson of the poverty of Creationist evidence, and as a warning to them to not to just grab anything they see that looks like it supports their nonsense.

I think such a hoax is quite legitimate, especially if perpetrated by someone with no scientific credentials to get tarnished. The trick, of course (and this should be fairly easy) is to make up something that could not possibly fool scientists or scholars, but will sucker the Creos.

One that I've wanted to do is to aquire a fossil (mineral shows are a good source) and carefully imbed a piece of knapped stone in the matrix, preferably chert (arrowheads are also available at the shows, but it'd be more fun to make somethihg).
