Heh, yeh, that one gave me a chuckle when it popped into my head. It is so scungy and yet, so apt.

If anyone wants to do anything wih it, or some variation of it, feel free.

Thanks once again to PZ, we learn that Expelled made nearly $25,000 this past weekend. That would be its opening weekend in Canada. It seems to have only shown at maybe 36 theaters.

PZ, by the way, is thinking that this will be his last post about that movie.

Over on Kevin Miller's blog (he's a screenwriter for Expelled), he wrote (nine days ago):
Considering that the film had a production budget of just $3.5 million and an estimated marketing budget of 2-3 times that amount, Expelled will almost certainly be well into the black by the time it is released on DVD in October.
If we assume the best case, the film cost $10.5 million. If we assume that the theaters only take 10% of the gross (far too conservative, but it works in Kevin's favor), it made back $7 million with its U.S. release. So it will have to make another $3.5 million to break even. At $25,000 per weekend, that will take nearly three years (and it's only got until October 21st).

But wait! Read again what Kevin wrote:
Expelled will almost certainly be well into the black by the time it is released on DVD in October.
When commenter "BathTub" points out that there's no way it'll make that much money in Canada in the next few months, Kevin responds:
...I said the film would become profitable once it hit DVD.
No, Kevin, you said "by the time" it hits DVD it will be profitable.

Apparently prepositions aren't this screenwriter's strong suit.

Seems like it will make money at some point and that is still too good for this piece of crud.

I also wonder how much more money they will make from DVD sales...

The less money they make, the less likely it is that somebody will try to replicate it. And the more Ben Stein will have trouble getting his grubby hands on another project (yes; I am mean-spirited).

Still no resolution from the courts about the Imagine copyright infringment?

How will that affect a DVD-release?

Interesting thought..... Dunno. It could, I suppose and once the lawyers get hold of it, that might bite the profits, might'n it?

This thing will ultimatly go into the black but I doubt if anyone's going to make enough money to pay their hassle. No matter what happens, this pathetic piece of offal is unlikely to ever be anything beyond the disappointment that it already is.

I thought the case had been dismissed?

No, the injunction that Yoko asked for (prohibiting further release of the film) was not granted. The lawsuit itself hasn't even really begun.

I would like to be in that courtroom when it finally hears the case, for the first couple of days, anyway. Whichever way it goes, it'll be fun to watch.

And really, it just might help Expelled a bit with the extra publicity.

Oh; ok.

Is anybody familiar enough with the copyright infringement regulations that he can make some predictions?

I guess that, on one hand, the case could be dismissed for good but, what is the best that Yoko can aspire to? A piece of the (tiny, weight-watcher like) cake?

I am wholly unfamiliar with copyright infringement regulations, but I'll chime in anyway:

Yoko Ono's estate is involved with several "Fair Use" lawsuits, the one with Expelled just happens to be the one we all pay attention to.

I heard some guy on the radio (but I'll be darned if I can remember who...great testimonial there, eh?) say that it was such a short clip that it will undoubtedly be thrown out in court.

Unfortunately, as filthy pointed out, the net effect of all this is that a horrible movie gets a little more publicity.

You know, if they want to talk bottom line as a measure of success, they should probably take into consideration that their film likely didn't change anyones mind about evolution or ID. The choir may have loved it, but who cares?

A good documentary is supposed to offer food for thought and spur discussion on whatever point the filmmakers were trying to make. All I saw was a discussion about the film itself and not the subject of the film, much outside of the usual circles, which includes ours. Where is the public outcry or even a discussion that "evolutionists" have a lock on what science will be taught, outside of where this battle is regularly faught? I don't see how the film has served the cause of widening opinion in the direction of ID at all. If anything, it has become a novelty film and a critics toy for use as an example of bad filmmaking. Again, it was the film itself, and not the theme of the film that took the heaviest hits. They did not succeed at making their point.

If the idea was to persuade anyone of anything, it failed.

Come to think of it, all they have left is that maybe, eventually, the film will be out of the red.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?
