I'm going to look at this from an all-documentaries perspective, also, but there are over 500 movies in that category, so it might take some time.
And some time it took. Expelled is 372nd out of all 509 documentaries with opening-weekend figures using corrected data (27th percentile).
. . .
So, Expelled had a record number of screens at opening, and a miserable performance, eh?

Now, would it not be reasonable to assume that the owners of these 1,052 theaters, who were apparently conned into booking Expelled, might be very resistant to future efforts by Creationists and fundies in general to promote such a propamentary? I mean, these are business people, after all. They must hate to have wasted all those empty seats, right?

That caught my eye, too. Sort of the Creo version of the New Age folks who are offended by the idea that there might be some kind of scientifically verifiable underlying reality to the universe. Reminds me of that "evidence-based microfascism" BS we heard from those woo quarters a couple of years ago.

I regard this deep-seated avoidance of reality to be a kind of mental illness. I wish there were a cure.

Not on a per-theater basis, no. But I don't know who cares about that, really, besides me.

What people do seem to care about is the total gross of a movie, but that's unfair to older movies unless you adjust for inflation, as I've done below:

Rank Movie Corrected Uncorrected
                                              Gross Rank
---------------------------------------------------------------------
  1 Fahrenheit 9/11 $132,054,754.34 1
  2 March of the Penguins $83,115,147.31 2
  3 Bowling for Columbine $25,549,570.37 5
  4 An Inconvenient Truth $25,362,685.14 4
  5 Sicko $24,540,079.00 3
  6 Madonna: Truth or Dare $24,534,202.57 6
  7 Winged Migration $13,336,763.62 7
  8 Hoop Dreams $12,888,661.17 10
  9 Super Size Me $12,781,093.44 8
 10 Roger and Me $11,622,118.85 12
 11 Tupac: Resurrection $8,807,040.08 11
 12 Mad Hot Ballroom $8,713,193.71 9
 13 The Aristocrats $6,845,075.15 13
 14 Spellbound (2003) $6,536,092.42 14
 15 Imagine: John Lennon $6,284,029.63 21
 16 Paris is Burning $6,176,671.16 20
 17 Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed $5,617,447.00 15
 18 Touching the Void $5,089,203.58 16
 19 Crumb $4,809,804.84 30
 20 The Fog of War $4,790,403.66 18
By these numbers, Expelled needs to make another $6,004,671.86 before it can properly join the top-ten grossing documentaries. It has to more than double its gross to date, without DVD sales or rentals or foreign income (not that it will generate any foreign ticket sales, anyway).

I think it's funny that Expelled has to pull in another $1,227,628.16 just to beat a documentary about a dirty joke (The Aristocrats, which was seen on less than a quarter as many screens).

Witness Ben Stein's hypocrisy. Six years ago, he wrote that to ruin American competitiveness, you should "act as if science were on an equal footing with voodoo." And now he's saying, "science leads to killing people," and elevating the ID voodoo to far more than "equal" status.

How do you make a psuedo-documentry? This way:
How does one make a “pseudo-documentary”?

William Dembski

Mark Perakh now resorts to calling Ben Stein's EXPELLED a “pseudo-documentary” (go here)? I know what a pseudo-science is (e.g., Darwinism, in its claim to account for biological complexity). And I know what a “mockumentary” is (e.g., This is Spinal Tap). But how does one interview real people about what they really believe and come out with a “pseudo-documentary”?

Well, perhaps we should not be surprised. Mark Perakh offered this insight at the Panda's Thumb pseudo-blog.
Well, I guess that's how you cry the blues & do lame apologetics for it rather than make one, but you get my drift.

Hey 'mooner, check out #10 in the comments! Dembski feels neglected, methinks.

Well, as usual, I can't comment there. On the bright side, check out Ray's actions here:

I didn't realize until I read this Panda's Thumb comment how much of a [cough] favor Ben Stein has done for his ID buddies.

P1: Science leads to killing people.
P2: ID is science.
C1: ID leads to killing people, so people should turn away from ID.

P3: Evolution is not science (per just about everyone at Uncommon Descent).
C2 (from P1 and P3): Darwin's ideas are not known to have led to killing people.

P4: Science is faith (Bill scott, among many other creationists).
P5: Faith is a synonym for religious belief.
C3 (P1, P4 and P5) : Religious beliefs lead to killing people.

This is fun!

The Numbers is reporting that Expelled grossed only $683,552 this past weekend at only 656 theathers, for a total gross to date of $6,618,504. At $1,042 per theater, that's an average of $347 per day per theater (and perhaps ten people per screening), down from $1,149 on opening Friday just 17 days ago.

It still hasn't out-grossed the dirty joke movie, but it has moved from 17th place to 14th place in total corrected-for-inflation gross income.

We really shouldn't be surprised: Remember when Stein blamed the 9/11 attacks on athiests?

It's become apparent that his apology was not sincere after all.

Who's in it for the money?

Another bitching from Dembski, this one with pictures & everything!
6 May 2008

Who's in it for the money?

William Dembski

Critics of the ID movement often complain that we're fabulously well funded by right-wing extremists and in it for our own aggrandizement. Fortunately, money leaves a trail. When one follows it, Darwinists seem to be doing much better financially than ID theorists (perhaps an indication that they are serving Mammon more faithfully). Let's consider a few better off Darwinists:
Erm Bill, me fellow tetrapod, did it not occure to you that the listed persons just might have some respectable talent & expertise in their fields and are capable of expressing themselves well enough that others will want read them? If you really believe that they didn't earn their wealth, you are a bigger lout than even I'd thought.
