We are all familiar with the god-fearing billboards that have been put up around the country. My favorite more recent one was a cartoonish image of Santa Claus on his knees before the baby Jesus, accompanied by some Bible passage.

Probably some of you are familiar with billboard responses from freethought group, such as these:

My local group, www.hagp.org is involved in PhillyCOR and co-sponsored this new billboard: http://www.phillycor.com/press.html

Well, it isn't totally new since the same design was used by another member group, freethoughtaction.com in NJ. We liked the design so much we used it again.

This billboard war is great -- including the way the opposition exposes themselves as inept propagandists with billboards like "Why do atheists hate America?"

Your group's billboard is great, BTW!

Eh, I don't know. Bit tame for my tastes. It makes atheism sound like some sort of shameful disease. "Have herpes? You're not alone." I guess it's fine for its purposes, but I prefer to see atheism touted as preferable to religion, not merely an affliction someone need not feel ashamed of.

I thought of it as having something to do with raising awareness about existing community and fellowship, not avoiding shame.

I think that yes, the billboard could be considered somewhat apologetic, but that's not the way I took it.

I see the "you're not alone" message to be a fundamental point for any minority movement beginning to establish its identity and power base. It simply invites and emboldens atheists to find others who think alike, both among their families and acquaintances, and through the organization that is mentioned.

Mostly, I just tune all of that crap out. Indeed, if it were up to me, billboards wouldn't exist anywhere but in Haiti, where they can really use those revenues along with any & whatever other breaks the poor bastards can get.

But if we must have them, I rather liked the Fairy Tale, although it was a tad 'pastel' for my taste. And here's another from Freedom from Religion:

Why are the deeply religious so upset by this sort of thing? Are they so insecure, so fearful in their faith, that they'd refuse others the opportunity to express an opposing view?

I once had a girlfriend named Dogma. She was Austrian. It's a long story but to cut to the chase, it didn't end well. I wish someone had warned me to "Beware of Dogma."

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.
