Thanks for reminding me. I haven't had Folding@home running since I swapped out my computer quite some time ago.
I have an nVidia GTX960 right now which seems to be pretty good for processing these things, but I can't seem to find where I can fine-tune CPU/GPU settings.
In order to get the GPU running at all, I have to set the FAH-speed options to medium which results in 100% CPU. I would like some kind of slider where I could set both CPU and GPU to 25% work load. That way I could keep it on always without having fans blowing too much, and power-consumption fairly stable.

You might be able to find something in "Advanced Control," Mab. Left-click the tray icon to get a menu with the advanced option.
But from what I recall when I re-installed the latest version, GPUs won't be used if you elect to install and run the software as a service. But if you don't install as a service, F@H will only run if someone is logged into the machine. (It's probably because since Windows 7, services don't get access to any user interface.) |

I've checked the "advanced options" but those aren't advanced enough.
It does run on the GPU, but only when I change the "folding Power" settings to "medium".
At that point, FahCore_a4.exe use ~75% CPU time, and FahCore_18.exe use ~25%.
The only way to dial down CPU-time is to lower "Folding Power" to light, at which point the GPU pauses, adn FahCore_a4.exe jumps to 99%.
The F@H application creates annoying moments of lag when I'm playing games, and especially when I can't dial down CPU- and GPU- usage. So, I'll be turning the F@H off when I start playing. And will most likely forget to turn it on again when I don't play.

F@H Web Control gives one the option to only allow F@H to run while idle. That ought to stop your lag problems.
I know my GPU isn't compatible, but right this moment, I've got F@H set to run always and full-power, and it's taking up about 60% of the CPU, with Netflix and Minecraft basically splitting another 35%, and I'm having no lag at all on either app. F@H is finishing work units in about 2.5 days (of course, F@H gets 100% of the CPU while I'm AFK at night and when I'm at work).
I'm really liking the latest version of the code. I've gotta convince my kid to let me run it on his machine... |

I'm experimenting with running it on one of my command-line-only Linux virtual machines. I used to run F@H and Seti@Home for many years. I haven't in quite some time. "Date of last work unit 2003-12-19"

It does. But then it won't run while I'm doing stuff like reading SFN, facebook or other web-sites...

I don't know about you, but five days a week, I spend most of my time either at work or asleep.
But F@H's "only while idle" setting means you won't need to remember to turn it on and off (or even just pause and unpause it). Since you said you'll forget to turn it back on, some CPU cycles are better than none. |

I'm currently switching between "only while idle" and continuous background running, so it's never really off.
I rarely leave the computer for long without turning it off before I go. My energy-conscious wife berates me for leaving the computer (or any electrical device) on without attendance. Media-server and HTPC excluded. But I'm not considering running F@H on those because I need them as cooled down as possible due to very poor heat dissipation (minimally active fans in order to run quiet).

Well there's your problem...
Actually, I just calculated the cost of running a computer with its power supply maxed out, and it'd be over $300 a year. But my computers don't come close to the maximums on their power supplies when chugging away on F@H.
I found a List of CPU Power Dissipation Figures. I don't happen to remember which cores I've got at home, and the numbers in those charts are estimates, but if you multiply the wattage of your CPU by 1.314, you'll get dollars-per-year if you leave it running 24/7 and your electricity costs 15 cents per kilowatt-hour. So, for examples, running an Athlon II X4 650 constantly will burn almost $125/year, while your scrappy old 100 MHz Pentium will dent your wallet by only $13 and a quarter.
The rest of the innards of the computer probably don't add up to much, wattage-wise (though I did just last night get rid of a dial-up modem card from my oldest machine - wonder how much that worthless piece of crap cost me over the years...). However, peripherals - especially laser printers - can be costly.
At any rate, boot times drive me absolutely bonkers, so I'm going to consider the electricity used while idle to be my donation to F@H from now on. |

I've solved my boot time by using SSD running SATA3 mode. For some unknown reason, my "mainframe" keeps bouncing up on again when entering suspend-mode.
Back when I had Win8, it worked like it should. |

Is anyone else running the Linux version? I have it email the log daily but it kept getting longer and longer. So after emailing, I now have it delete the log but that stops it from logging even after I create an empty file for it to append to. Hmm.
